Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
The Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas of Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenees Mountains to the south. It benefits from an exceptional climate (a "Mediterranean Climate") and has an unusually rich wildlife, a spectacular coast, and surprising history. It possesses a number of World Heritage sites, including Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, and the Pont du Gard.
The Cathars had a striking impact on the region .Catharism was widespread for a short period of time in the Middle Ages in and around the Carcassonne area of the Languedoc, before being violently suppressed by French lords after the Catholic Church declared the Cathars a heretical sect. Many impressive ruined Cathar castles and towns, such as Minerve, are a reminder of this short but important period of Languedoc history. Of these, the castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse in the Pays Cathares or the castle of Montferrand on the ridge of the Pic St Loup, are striking examples from this bleak and violent period of local history.
The other major influence on the area are the extensive vineyards that shape the landscape in all directions . The Languedoc-Roussillon wine producing area is not only the largest in France, but also the world. It spreads from the Pyrenees to the Rhone valley, encompassing some 300,000 hectares (750,000 acres) of planted vines, making it several times larger than either the Bordeaux or the Australian wine regions.
Less than an hour from Cantalauze are endless miles of sandy beaches at resorts like Gruissan and further south the captivating Collioure , the St Tropez of the Languedoc. There are over 70 kilometres (40 miles) of golden sandy beaches stretching from the mouth of the River Aude, down the length of the Golfe du Lion to the rugged cliffs of the Côte Vermeille at the Spanish border.
We have a comprehensive website showing lots of information about the history of the vineyard, the wine making activities, Languedoc history, local tourist information and numerous photographs of the property as well as the estate. Please use the link on the site.
The Carcassonne / Trebes area
Dominating the high-ground above "modern" Carcassonne, the Cite (the largest walled medieval city in Europe) is a huge attraction for French and international tourists. It is well worth joining one of the guided trips to gain a real insight into its history and workings. During July and August, wonderful twice-daily medieval style tournaments take place, with professional mounted stuntmen conducting life-like jousts and armed combat bouts.
The nearby Medieval small town of Trebes (5 minutes away from the vineyard) is a popular stop-off for people travelling on or along the Canal du Midi, offering a number of shops, banks (with cash points), opticians, chemists, doctors, hairdressers, estate-agents and good local restaurants - all within walking distance of the centre of the village.
Being on the main tourist route from Carcassonne to the region’s vineyards, Trebes is known as the "Gateway to the Minervois". Leaving Trebes, you soon arrive at numerous local "domaines" where you can buy wine direct from the growers. Domaine de Catalauze is the largest member of the Trebes wine cooperative, although we also bottle our own wine too.

Le Manoir has the look and feel of a traditional French farmhouse, but furnished and equipped for every modern comfort. Beds are so comfy and bathrooms are great. The house easily absorbs 10 adults, even on rainy days. Cycling along the Canal du Midi is a treat not to be missed. Walking, cycling or driving the 2.4 km to Trebes for wine, groceries or fresh pastries was a daily activity. Owner and staff are very welcoming and we felt right at home from the moment we arrived. If you like a relaxing break with family and friends, this is the place. |
