MacKenzie Cottage is situated in Satran at the head of Loch Harport and overlooks Glen Drynoch. Satran is in the area of Skye known as Minginish and a ten minute drive from the Cuillin Hills. The area around abounds with wild life; otters, oystercatchers, sea-eagles, golden-eagles, sparrow-hawks, along with buzzards that sweep and soar along the glen.

An ideal base for climbing the Cuillin Hills or searching out the "Fairy Pools" as the start of the walk can reached within a 10 minute car journey.

In the village of Carbost you will find Talisker Distillery where you can book onto a tour to find out how single malt spirit is made then matured in warehouses to become Talisker Single Malt Whisky. Also in Carbost you will find a Post Office(9am to 12noon), Doctors surgery, our local pub and village shop.

Dunvegan Castle & Gardens, the home of Clan MacLeod, is about 45 minutes by car and can be visited from the 1st of April until the 15th of October 2014. Leave plenty of time as you can easily spend most of the day there. Another castle to visit is the ruin of Armadale in the south of the island, here you will find out about the MacDonald history and again leave plenty of time to explore. Open until the 31st of October each year.

These are just a few places to visit and you will find maps & reference books in the cottage to help plan your journey through Skye

The Hebrides region

MacKenzie & Morrison Cottages are in the area of Skye known as Minginish, this peninsula is surrounded by sea and the mountain range of the Cuillin. The sea-lochs are Loch Harport, which opens to Loch Bracadale, Loch Eynort and Loch Scavaig, they have spectacular sea-cliffs which can be only appreciated from the water, so, if you have a kayak take it with you. The Cuillin Hills form part of the border to the area of Stathaird and must be one of the untamed areas of Britain.

Our cottage is in what has become know as the centre of Skye and is dominated by The Cuillin a treat of peaks, vertical faces and steep ridges, in summer they are an exhilarating and challenging outing, in winter a major mountaineering expedition. So please be careful!! Viewed early in the morning from Glen Brittle, or later in the day from Elgol, this mountain range is the photographers delight. Don't be surprised if you go around a corner to find a film crew filming for the next blockbuster and if you have seen Prometheus, Ronin, Stardust, Highlander to name a few you might recognise the scenery.

The larger towns and villages of Skye are within 15 to 45 minutes of the cottage. Broadford offers a wonderful view over the bay to the Isle of Pabbay, bespoke jewelers, good fish & chips from the Waterfront Fish & Chip Shop, a well-stocked CO-OP and plenty more, even an Estate Agent if you want move to Skye. Portree has an old fashioned appeal, with colourful houses and traditional harbour, just outside the village check out Aros for theatre, films or something to eat. In Portree itself you will find small shops with gifts, visit Skye Soaps,Tippiecanoe or MacIntryes where you will find newpapers, or, if you have little ones one of the best toy shops in the Highlands. Dunvegan has the home of the Chief of Clan MacLeod where you will find that you can tour the castle and the garden grounds, best to leave most of the day to do this.

Unravel the mysteries of this magical Isle by driving the back roads where you will be rewarded with wonderful views of ever changing topography, be aware that the roads are narrow. Please be polite and allow faster cars to past by using the passing places, note also, if you are at the top of a hill the car coming up toward you has right away so park up in the passing place until they pass you. If the driver is a local they will wave their thanks.

Lastly, if its a whisky distillery you would like to tour we have one that is within walking distance. Talisker Distillery was established in the 1830, in the small crofting area of Carbostbeg, apart from short breaks in its history it has been producing the malt spirit that matures into Talisker Single Malt Whisky since then.
