Walking on Skye

Skye offers many tremendous walks of varying lengths and difficulty with dramatic scenery all around. The Cuillins offer some of the best climbing in Europe with several munros for bagging. There are many walks in the foothills for all ages and abilities. Raven Cottage is only 20 minutes from both Glenbrittle and Sligachan that are popular starting points for walking in the Red and Black Cuillin range.

Skye is steeped in history with Dunvegan Castle ancestral home to the Clan MacLeod for nearly 800 years. There are plenty of museums and castles to visit on the island. Eilean Donan castle is just over the Skye bridge and featured in the film The Highlander.

On Skye you are regularly reminded of the Young Pretender Bonnie Prince Charlie who after defeat at Culloden in 1746, escaped from the battlefield and lurked for six months in the Western Isles under the care of loyal followers like Flora MacDonald. Flora escorted the Prince, disguised as her maid, to safety where they sheltered, and then went ' over the sea to Skye'.

Eating out

The Old Inn pub in Carbost for Loch Harport oysters, local fish including langoustines and the world famous Stornoway black pudding. The internationally acclaimed Three Chimneys restaurant is near Dunvegan. The Sligachan hotel at the foothills of the Cuillin mountains has a restaurant and brewery and is twenty minutes from the cottage.

Raven Cottage is located in the village of Eynort on the west coast of the majestic Isle of Skye on the Minginish peninsula. The cottage is situated only twenty minutes by car from Sligachan and Glenbrittle both starting points for walking and climbing the majestic Cuillins. From outside the front door of the cottage you can walk directly into Glenbrittle Forest and down to Loch Eynort.

Carbost is the nearest village at about ten minutes by car where you will find a wee shop selling all the essentials plus petrol, a post office with free cash withdrawals, a play area for kids, a Medical Centre, the Old Inn pub for great locally caught fish and the famous Talisker distillery - visitors centre at Carbost (4 miles from the cottage) for tour of the distillery and trying a wee dram....slainte!

"Simply wonderful"

What a wonderful place Raven Cottage is!! We were looking for a well fitted out cottage in a tranquil setting for a family holiday and that’s exactly what we found here. The arrangements for booking the stay were easy and the owner answered all our questions – overall we were made to feel very welcome and supported if need be. There is lots to do for all ages close by the house and from there its easy to get around Skye – or you can do very little which in so charming a place is very easy to do too. My family and I would thoroughly recommend a stay at Raven Cottage but not for too long or too many times – as we want to be able come back!!

"This cottage is superb."

This is a lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings on a stunning island. The cottage is well maintained and well equipped with up-to-date quality furniture and everything you could want, including games and a table football set. There are even teddies in the children's room. Communication was excellent, both with the owners and with the caretaker who lives nearby. Highly recommended as a base for anyone visiting Skye.

"Raven Cottage was a wonderful home away from home - comfortable home and relaxing location"

Raven Cottage was tidy and comfortable, with a spacious master bedroom. The children had lots of fun with the table football. We greatly enjoyed having the trails of the Glen Brittle Forest right outside our door, several longer coastal walks easily accessed and the Cullins and wonderful town of Carbost just up the road. We appreciated the lovely garden out back and the very nearby Wee Tea Room for extra little treats. We also enjoyed a tour of the Talisker Distillery and a meal at the Carbost Inn, all just a five minute drive. Lindsay was always quick to respond and pass along information. Michael was welcoming and very informative. We hope we can return soon!

Thank you for your excellent feedback on your stay at Raven Cottage. The best feedback is guests wanting to return, so I hope to be able to welcome you in the future to our lovely part of Skye.
