Home description

The house is situated in S. Croce at the top end of Caramanico Terme from where there are lovely views of the surrounding countryside and mountains.

A short stroll down the hill finds you in the village with its quaint cobbled streets and interesting historical buildings. Here you will also find all the shops, restaurants and friendly local bars. Sit in one of the many squares enjoying a coffee and ice cream or a nice glass of wine while watching the world go by and taking in the wonderful scenery.

If you are feeling more energetic, from the back door the track goes straight into the mountains and joins the network of mountain trails from where you can enjoy the impressive scenery of the Maiella National Park with its abundance of wildlife.

The house itself is fully furnished and equipped with kitchen / diner and separate lounge for you to relax in. The central heating ensures that the house is cosy in winter after maybe a days ski-ing. The solid stone walls keep the house cool in summer, ideal to come back to after a day on the beach.

There are two main double bedrooms upstairs to comfortably sleep 4 people and a toilet suite on the second floor.

On the ground floor is the cantina, which has been converted into a third bedroom / second living room complete with futon / sofa bed. This level also houses shower room / toilet. Through from this room is the fully equipped laundry / utility room with washing machine, tumble drier, clothes drier and ironing facilities.

The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

The region of Abruzzo above all offers diversity – you will find nature, mountains, beach, gastronomy, art, architecture, local crafts, museums, folklore, sport – something for everyone in fact. As well as the Majella National Park, where the house is situated the Gran Sasso National Park is less than an hours drive away passing through the beautiful town of Farindola well known for Pecorino cheese production.Truffles, maccheroni alla chitarra and the local wine Montepulciano D'Abruzzo are also well worth sampling.

The climate tends to favour mild springs and autumns with hot summers. Winters can be cold and snowy particularly in the hills and mountains where there are plentiful ski resorts, but equally it can be mild with chilly nights.

The area of Abruzzo has a wealth of monuments and archeological points of interest. The region was inhabited by the Vestini.

The house is well situated to access the local national parks and nature reserves as well as the breath taking natural features such as the valley of the hundred waterfalls (Valle delle Centro Cascate), thermal springs at Caramanico Terme and Campo Imperatore which is described as the Tibet of Italy. Why not try the local favourite of Arrosticini-skewered lamb kebabs cooked on coals outside the butchers shop high on the mountain plain.

Winter sports are now popular all over Abruzzo with a rich and diverse range of ski resorts and pistes that are ideal for keen sportsmen beginners and families alike. You could also try your hand at snowboarding, snowrafting, tobogganing dog sledding and cross country ski-ing.

A short drive from the house brings you to Abruzzos Adriatic coast with one hundred and thirtythree kilometers of wide sandy beaches and many marinas. Windsurfing, fishing, sailing, diving and watersports can all be enjoyed.

Caramanico Terme / Santa Croce, Caramanico Terme area

Situated at 700mt. a.s.l. near the confluence of the Orfento and Orta rivers, on a hilltop between the Monte Morrone and the Majella mountains (the second highest mountain of the Apennines), Caramanico is just 40 mins from Pescara airport, 45 mins from the coast and 20 mins from ski resorts, a paradise for cross-country skiers and excursion lovers. Caramanico enjoys a great climate, breezy in summer and dry in winter, and has been known since the 16th century for the healthy properties of its spas. Also a destination for nature and art lovers, being in the heart of the Maiella Park, offers many itineraries immersed in the forests leading to the hermitages of St. Peter Celestine, or to admire the ancient shepheards' huts in stone called Tholoi.

The town takes its name from either cara, meaning rock, or from arimannia, a lombard establishment in the late Middle Ages. Then the name Terme was added in 1960 because of the presence of a spa nearby (the only one in Abruzzo), with famous healthy waters. In its territory there is also a Natural Reserve, Valle dell'Orfento. In nearby Valle Giumentina paleolithic remains have been found (among the most important in Italy). The present settlement is recorded since lombard times. Then it underwent a remarkable development in the XIV-XV centuries, under the D'Aquino family, and in that period many important monuments were built. In 1706 a terrible earthquake nearby destroyed the town.
Sights & Excursions
• Church of S. Maria Maggiore (XV century), with a fine portal and a highrelief by Johann from Lubeck, originally almost a fortress, with high walls and a tower.
• Church of St. Tommaso, founded in the 12th century in honour of Thomas of Canterbury. with a wonderful portal with stone sculptures and 13th century frescoes; on Jubilee years the Holy Door of the church is opened by the archbishop of Chieti.
• The historical centre, with fine medieval houses
• The Eremo di San Giovanni, where Sant'Onofrio lived for seven years, in the 13th century AD.
• Natural Reserve Valle dell'Orfento, opened in 1971 before the institution of the Maiella National Park, of which it is today part. It is one of the wildest and most spectacular corners of the Apennine: a deep canyon created by the wild Orfento river, most times of the year covered with a thick vegetation, that rises from 500 mt to a breathtaking 2700 meters. The beauty of the landscape and the presence of rare species (wolves and eagles, gentian and peonies) make it a true naturalistic jewel. A well equipped network of paths of varied difficulty and length allows to cross the whole valley and its many biotopes (river, forests, prairies, crests). All necessary hiking information can be obtained at the Visitors' Centre "Paolo Barrasso" in Caramanico Terme, which also releases the authorization necessary to visit the Reserve.
A track goes from the back of the house up into the network of paths accross and round the mountains.

• Caramanico spas
The extraordinary therapeutic virtues of sulphureous waters of Caramanico have been known for centuries. The first testimony of their use was in 1576, when Father Serafino Razzi, a Dominican preacher visiting the area, describes in his travel diary the crowd of ill persons going to the "aqua putreda" of the spring called "Zolfanaia". The waters gushing out from the springs called "La Salute" and "Gisella" have a high content of sulphured hydrogen at a temperature of 10,5 degrees Centigrade and are channeled into the spa plants for hydroponic therapy and other treatments. Also the low-mineral water of the spring "Pisciarello" has healthy diuretic effects, and recently a centre for beauty care was established. The spa season goes from April to November.
Enjoy the many local events and festivities.
