The Campania region

Campania is a region celebrated for its climate, the fertility of the lands and the astonishingly beautiful landscapes.
The Vesuvius on the Gulf of Naples is the famous volcano overlooking the gulf of Naples . The two beautiful gulfs of Naples and Salerno with the Amalfi coast, separated by the Sorrento peninsula, are world famous for the high cliffs, sandy bays, grottoes and islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida: Each view an enchanting postcard picture, and such a great experience for the senses, that the ancients rightly called this region "felix ager", a happy land.

Capri area

Capri island is divided in two Communes, Capri and Anacapri, both surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and garden terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. Capri can easily be reached by hydrofoil from Naples. From Anacapri commune you can reach the celebrated Blue Grotto.

History: The island was connected to the mainland in Paleolithic Period, and was inhabited in antiquity by Greeks and Romans. Since when Emperor Augustus built here a villa, the island became a fashionable resort for the patricians, and Tiberius chose it as his residence from 27 to 37 AD. Then after the fall of the Roman Empire it was reduced to a fishermen's site, often attacked by Saracens and pirates. A revival began in the 18th century, with the coming of the Bourbon monarchs to the throne of Naples, and in that period palaces and churches were built. Since the late 18th century travellers from Northern Europe, poets, musicians and artists, began to include Capri among their itineraries, and with the rediscovery of the Blue Grotto visitors came in ever growing numbers, and many chose Capri as a residence or built their fine mansions on the island, making it a world-famous destination.

What to see in Capri:
The Faraglioni
Capri’s three world famous Faraglioni rise up, majestic and solitary, from the sea to the south-east of the island. The largest rock, connected to the coast by a thin isthmus of land, is known as “Stella” (star) and is 109 meters high, while the other two, “Faraglione di mezzo” (middle stack) and “Scopolo” (rock), are 81 and 104 meters high respectively. The only inhabitants of the Faraglioni are a colony of blue lizards, an extremely rare variety of blue reptiles.

The Natural Arch
This natural arch-shaped attraction was once a cave. Its original structure changed over the centuries due to telluric movements and wind and rain erosion. The Natural Arch is 200 meters high and stands to the east of the island, not far from the coast and its caves.

The Piazzetta
The scene of 1950s and 1960s Dolce Vita and a setting for love affairs, betrayal, scandals and Hollywood scoops, Piazza Umberto I still maintains its role as the very heart of society life on the island today. Sitting at one of the open air cafe tables beneath the Clock Tower is a ritual that no visitor should miss out on.
Charterhouse of San Giacomo

The Charterhouse of San Giacomo is a splendid example of Capri-style architecture and was built in the 14th century by Count Giacomo Arcucci, adviser to the queen of Naples, Joan I of Anjou. In the mid 17th century, the Charterhouse was expanded and restored with Baroque elements. The Charterhouse has two beautiful cloisters, a larger one dating back to the 15th century extension and the smaller, original cloisters from the 14th century. Today this majestic architectural complex houses a museum, a library and a school.

Church of San Costanzo
This pretty little Byzantine style church was probably built before the year 1000 and is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Capri, Costanzo. The church is painted in white throughout and is located near Marina Grande, in a very attractive setting.

Villa Jovis
This is the most imposing of the 12 villas built on the island by Emperor Tiberius in around 30 A.D.
Villa Jovis overlooks the sea from the top of Monte Tiberio, with a truly spectacular view that embraces the entire Bay of Naples. The Villa covers around 7000 m_ and has several floors. The enormous cisterns, located at the centre of the complex, are considerable and were used supply the emperor and his following with rainwater for drinking and bathing.

Events:
Capri Film Festival - December
Every December since 1991, Capri has hosted an international festival dedicated to the cinema. The event attracts Italian artistes, Hollywood stars and independent filmmakers keen to present their works in this exclusive location.

What to see in Anacapri:
the Villa San Michele and the Axel Munthe Museum, created by Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe (1857-1949), who spent on the island 56 years of his life: he bought a large area of land on Mount Barbarossa and made it a sanctuary for migratory birds.

the Sentiero dei Fortini, a route among rocky cliffs touching the small fortresses built in Saracen times and still used during the Napoleonic wars, from Punta Carena to Punta dell'Arcera, below the road leading from Anacapri to the Blue Grotto Grotta Azzurra.

The church of Sant'Antonio di Padova, rising on top of the so-called Phoenician Stairway, built in the 18th century over a previous chapel dedicated to the Saint; it was a mariners' church, and meeting place of fishermen at sunset.

The Grotta Azzurra, which can be reached from Anacapri with 50 minutes walking, on of the many wonders of this otherwise wonderful island. The grotto is a cavity whose only light comes from the very small entrance, creating the legendary blue reflections on the walls and a strange silver luminescence of the sunrays reflected from the white sandy bottom.

Chair lifts to Monte Solaro that is the highest point on Capri.

Events
on 12-13 June, patron feast with a procession carrying the statue of the St. Anthony along the alleys of the town, with flower decorations prepared in all the quarters, and children following the procession dressed in Franciscan tunics: on the occasion, children are presented with small loaves of bread called "pane di Sant'Antonio"

The Settembrata Anacaprese, a grapes festival with typical products, dances and music all around the town, with separate programs in the four historical contrade, Le Pietre, Le Stalle, La Piazza e Le Boffe.
