The Calabria region
Calabria is an area of outstanding natural beauty that possesses the quality of being popular whilst still being unspoilt. This area has been aptly described as ‘astonishingly beautiful’ and was, until now, undiscovered by international tourism. It is not a typical package tour destination and it is all about a real Italian experience and living La Dolce Vita.
Calabria is one of the best kept secrets of Italy. with its many beaches, hill top villages, mountains and the Aspromonte & Sila National Parks. On the west coast in the Capo Vaticano area, beautiful beaches and small coves abound, some only accessed by sea.
The region of Calabria is mountainous and away from the coast you will find remote villages steeped in a rich history. Calabria is popular with Italian holiday makers due to its beautiful beaches, low prices and wonderful climate, making it the ideal holiday place for everyone.
In the past, Calabria has been visited by many civilizations such as the Greeks, the Byzantines, the Saracens, and the Normans. They have all left their mark in architecture, Castles and on the cuisine of the Region. A drive of under 2 hours and you'll find yourself in the mountains of the Sila & Aspromonte National Parks where walking and skiing in the winter are popular attractions.
The region of Calabria has managed to remain relatively untouched and has escaped mass-tourism, with many of the small hilltop villages and hamlets still enjoying age-old traditions and customs. Cuisine in the region of Calabria tends to be spicy and flavourful, featuring pasta, cheeses and some typically Greek ingredients such as honey and figs, and the area produces sweet white wine. Whilst enjoying a holiday in the region of Calabria, activities include walking, hiking and bird-watching in the National Parks, horse-riding, rock-climbing and skiing in the mountains, and various water sports such as sailing and scuba- diving along the coast.
A short walk from the Resort are the seaside restaurants & Bars at Santa Maria beach. Capo Vaticano with its beaches & eateries are only a few Kilometres away as are the villages of Ricadi & San Nicola with their shops, weekly market & restaurants.
Tropea is a 15 minute drive from Delta Club & is well known for its miles of white sandy beaches and turquoise coloured water and of course it is nicknamed the home of the 'Red Onion'. There is also an annual Blues festival in the centre of Tropea towards the beginning of September, live bands playing in an open air atmosphere most nights during the festival.
Tropea dates back to the 17th century with cobbled narrow streets, charming cafes, restaurants, souvenir and fashion shops speckled along the winding and meandering laneways. It’s relaxing to just sit outside one of the cafes of an evening, have a frothy cappuccino and watch all of the Italians enjoying their evening stroll through the streets of Tropea.
Pizzo is another beautiful town is just a 35 minutes’ drive from the apartment, famous for its Chiesa di Piedigrotta, a church completely carved out of the tufo rock near the beach. This Calabrian town is also famous for its tartufo, a special delicious kind of ice cream celebrated with a festival in Pizzo every August.
Mini cruises to the Aeolian Isles depart from the port of Tropea/Capo Vaticano around 7:00am on a 350 seater air conditioned motor ship. On this daily trip you get to visit Stromboli, the famous active volcano plus Lipari. Arrive back at Tropea around 19:15pm, a day well spent, don't forget to bring your camera and savour those magic moments.
Activities in the locality of Delta Club include water sports, sailing, scuba diving, fishing, horse riding, cycling & motor boat hire.

"Great location, great area, great food!"
The Delta club was excellent. The apartment had all the facilities we needed, Wifi and use of a laptop was very useful with two sons aged 15 and 10. The apartment balcony was spacious with great views, especially because it was the corner apartment on the first floor. The Delta Club grounds were very well maintained with lovely gardens and a nice size pool that was never too crowded and the volleyball court was also well used (thanks for the speed badminton set was very useful). Also nice that it was gated, felt more secure.
Maybe the TV could do with updating? But not a big deal as long as we have wifi, i pad and laptop!
The beaches in the area were excellent especially Grotticelle, with good snorkelling opportunities and the local restaurants were good value including those in Santa Maria. Great towns to visit including Pizzo, Tropea and Scilla and the boat trip to Stromboli is recommended.
A car is needed to get around, although a walk to Santa Maria beach can be done, although a steep walk back up with moaning kids! More difficult with young children.
Would definitely come again. Thanks David
