Home description

This house in a living, wine-producing village offers an authentic French experience. Tucked away on a small square behind the church, the house is a few minutes walk away from the village shops (baker, butcher, grocer, tabac etc.) and twice-weekly market. You can walk or cycle (bikes have to be hired) for miles through vineyards, over hills, or along the Canal du Midi. There are local ‘fêtes’ in the summer, the August ‘feria’ in Béziers, jousting in Sète, organised wine walks and tasting (Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Coteaux du Languedoc, Minervois etc.) A short drive away you have the beach, Narbonne (a lesser known treasure!) and other interesting towns, Cathare sites such as Minerve, the Corbières, and an aqua & Safari park and river beaches for children. Nîmes and Montpellier are within easy reach in one direction and the Pyrenees and N. Spain in the other.

The house has preserved its nineteenth century features (elegant tiles, large rooms, high ceilings and marble fireplaces), and is pleasantly cool in summer and well heated in winter. It is comfortably appointed for anything from 2 to 7 people: there are 3 reception rooms and five bedrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen. In the front there is a large sunny courtyard to eat in, or enjoy a drink and watch the evening sky change over the ‘fortress’ church tower. If you prefer to eat out, the local butcher does good ready prepared meals, but there is a range of good restaurants around, including several right on the Canal.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

The village of Cruzy is in the heart of the Languedoc, on the borders of the Herault and the Aude, at the point where the flat coastal plain begins to get green and hilly. You will walk through vineyards, fruit trees and perfumed 'garrigue'. July and August are usually generally hot and fairly dry, and September and October can also bring sunny sunny days and blue skies. The area bears many traces of the Romans, and has a wealth of abbeys, medieval villages and other monuments.

Capestang area

The walks - or cycle or boat trips - up the Canal du Midi (a UNESCO heritage site) can take you to the famous 'seven locks' outside Beziers, or to Salleles d'Aude with its antiques, bookshop, restaurants and Roman pottery museum. Visit the wonderful church in Capestang, then sit and eat while you watch the boats moor nearby. In Narbonne and see the best Roman frescoes outside of Pompei, visit the impressive archbishop's palace, and one of France's most beautiful covered markets. you can swim on the miles of sandy beach near Narbonne, or you can swim or canoe in the river Orb at Roquebrun. In the villages around Cruzy, you can book for a wine walk, ending in a wine tasting, and you can take your pick of the many excellent restaurants around.

How to get there

Ryanair flies to Beziers, Carcassonne (60 km), Perpignan (88 km) and Montpellier (98 km). Easyjet flies to Montpellier also. It is possible to do the journey by train from London in a day (Eurostar as far as Montpellier, then continue to Beziers). There is a local bus from Beziers to Cruzy. Car hire is available at all these airports & stations, as well as in Beziers (eg. Europcar).
