The Languedoc-Roussillon region
With a population of about 1 million, Hérault is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790.
Hérault is part of the current region of Languedoc-Roussillon and is surrounded by the departments of Aude, Tarn, Aveyron, Gard, and the Mediterranean to the south.
The department is very geographically diverse, with beaches to the south, the Cévennes Mountains to the north, and agricultural land in between. Its Mediterranean beaches (especially Cap d'Agde) are a major attraction, as well as the caves of Clamouse and Demoiselles.Cruising along the Canal du Midi and walking or cycling along its tow paths is a popular holiday option.
Quarante is a pretty Hérault village set between the foothills of the Haut Languedoc Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying the best of that both worlds have to offer.
A short distance from the Canal du Midi, Quarante has over a thousand years of history. Discover its history in the old quarter with its picturesque streets, the remains of its fortifications, its Archaeological Museum and the beautiful 10th century Abbey with its Roman artefacts.
Since Roman times, Quarante has primarily been a wine making village. Its vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, meandering between 'garrigue' and pine forests.
