Home description
Casa Galiliei is a beautifully restored Renaissance apartment which has three/four bedrooms, two bathrooms and up-to-date facilities, including central heating and WiFi access. It is a stunning property, and even has its own hidden caves which date back to Etruscan times. Formerly the guest quarters of a 16th century monastery, Casa Galilei has been fully restored, yet retains many original features such as exposed chestnut beams and hand-fired terracotta tiles throughout.. It is 200 sq.metres in size and arranged over 2 floors with an entrance at ground level outside the monastery and an entrance inside the monastery.
The property is located in the friendly village of Capena, which has plenty of local colour and history, as well as wonderful cuisine and a thriving artists' community. It is approximately 40 minutes by car from the centre of Rome, which means that you can explore the Eternal City by day, and return to a quiet rural retreat in the evening. In addition, the coast can be reached by car in approximately 45 minutes.

The Lazio region
Please visit the Lazio Tourist website: www.aptprovroma.it for more information on the region of Lazio. This website is in English.
The coastal resort of Fregene is a 45 minute drive from Capena, and the town of Sperlonga is approximately 1.5 hours away by car. However, the best and nearest place to cool off in Summer is in a lake. Lake Bracciano is a 45 minute drive away, and Lake Martignano, which is as little more off the beaten track, is also a 45 minute drive from Capena.
Capena area
Capena is a thriving village of 5,500 inhabitants near the Sabine Hills. Despite its proximity to the city centre (it lies just 35km north of Rome along the Via Tiberina) the village retains a very distinct rural flavour – and many of the older residents have hardly ever set foot in the metropolis.
The apartments are located in and around the town’s ancient Rocca, a rocky outcrop that initially housed a medieval fortress and settlement, later superseded by a Renaissance monastery. The monastery was gradually sold off to private individuals – many of them artists – in the seventies. One of the best-known artists living and working in Capena today is Rosina Wachtmeister. The sixteenth-century building then became the heart of a small separate community made up of a picturesque jumble of houses, stairways and cobbled streets with a relaxed bohemian feel.
There are several outdoor pools in Capena, which are open during the summer. The long-distance footpath called Via Francigena di San Francesco passes through the village, and it is possible for guests to walk the local part of this. In addition, there are several thermal baths in the area, the largest of which is the Therme dei Papi.
Local festivals include a wine festival in October. There is also a torchlit procession of masked figures carrying holy relics on Easter Monday.
How to get there
Capena is easily accessible from both Rome Ciampino and Rome Fiumicimo airports, which are served by Ryan Air, Easy Jet and many major airlines. The village is approximately 35km north of Rome and is easily accessible via train and bus from both airports. However, airport pickup by taxi can be arranged on request. If you wish to explore Rome, car hire is not strictly necessary, but if you wish to explore the surrounding countryside, it is advisable to hire a car.

Guestbook for Casa Galilei
"Casa Galilei provides the best possible holiday experience one could wish for. With dramatic views across the gorge, the house is located in the oldest part of the settlement, on a site that has been in use for some 3,000 years. At the same time, its spacious, cool rooms and, above all, tasteful and modern interior all ensure that your stay will be most comfortable. However, the best part of staying at Casa Capena is that you will feel part of the local community, guided by Pucci's unfailing support for the visitor!" Dr RE Roth, Cambridge
“Staying in Casa Galilei was a wonderful experience. My family and I truly enjoyed the old town charm that Capena has offered. I hope to return again to wonderful and sunny Italy.” Monica Sisi, Chicago, USA
Have very much enjoyed exploring Capena (+ nearby Rome). A friendly, genuine place with a fascinating history, attractive surroundings and welcoming people. Excellent choice of restaurants too. Loved the apartment. Very well adapted and tastefully furnished. Thanks!" February 2007, Helen and Richard Boyles, Brixham, Devon
