The Western Cape region
The Western Cape is justly famous for some of the finest scenery anywhere in the world, with majestic mountains no distance from miles of sandy beaches. You can surf, climb a mountain and go wine tasting on the same day. It is culturally rich as only a meeting point of Europe, Africa and Asia can be and this is reflected in the food. It's diversity is increased by being at the junction of the warm Indian Ocean and the cold South Atlantic, giving a huge range of marine life. On shore there is the greatest biodiversity on earth, with thousands of unique proteas and other plants. The wildlife includes baboons, ostrich and several varieties of antelope, including eland. The climate is Mediterranean with low humidity. Summer (November to March) is comfortably hot and mostly dry, as most rain falls in the winter.
Cape Town / Kalk Bay/St James area
Twenty minutes to the South of Cape Town, towards Cape Point, lies Muizenberg, on the warm shores of False Bay. It was here that the Dutch lost the Cape to the British, in the battle of 1795. By the time of the Boer War, Muizenberg had become South Africa’s leading holiday resort. It is now a centre for surfing, eating and drinking, with miles of sandy beach, a theatre and a museum. Between here and St. James Cecil Rhodes had his country cottage, which is now a national monument.
St. James adjoins Kalk Bay (Lime Bay), which by the 1670s was settled by shipwrecked sailors who lived by making lime from the millions of sea shells. Kalk Bay is now a picturesque fishing village with a harbour full of seals and brightly painted wooden boats. From around midday the fishing boats return and unload their catch to crowds buying fish for supper straight from the boats. The Edwardian main street is full of antique shops, art and ceramics galleries, which make fascinating browsing and bars and restaurants are built on the rocks along the shore.
Kalk bay and St. James are squeezed between False Bay and the Silvermine Nature Reserve, which is part of Table Mountain National Park. The walks give excellent views of the harbour and the two mountain ranges that enclose False Bay. There are three golf courses within 10 km, mountain caves to explore and trails that lead across the peninsula to the Atlantic coast. Less than 10 km away on the slopes of the mountains is Constantia. Simon van der Stel produced wine at Groot Constantia in 1659 and it is still beautiful place to visit for a tasting.
The majestic sweep of False Bay between the Table Mountain range and the Hottentot’s Holland mountains across the bay to the east offers swimming, sailing and of course surfing. There are frequently whales in the bay and a colony of breeding penguins just down the peninsular at Simonstown. It is a short drive to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, where antelope can be seen in the National Park, and round the bay to Stellenbosch. This is the nation’s second oldest city and the centre of the best wine region.

How to get there
Fly to Cape Town - All major hire companies such as Imperial and Budget have offices at the airport - or contact www.capetowncarhire.co.za. St.James is a scenic 40 minute trip on Baden Powell Drive, round False Bay. From the airport take the N2 away from Cape Town, towards Somerset West. After 12.5 km take the R310 towards Muizenberg (away from Stellenbosch). This is Baden Powell Drive and the trip through the nature reserve round the bay is worth the small detour and often quicker than going into town. At Muizenberg continue round the shore a couple of km to St. James. Pass through most of St.James and the Terrace is on the right, between Kimberly Road and Leighton Road.

The beach is just in front and Table Mountain national park is just a few hundred yards up the hill.
Further details outdoors: There is a barbecue (braai) to use on the terrace and well maintained shared gardens with shade from huge palm trees. The pool is well maintained and convenient but can't compete with the St. James tidal pool, with the famous colourful beach huts (see pictures).
