The Western Cape region
Cape Town is in the south west of Africa, and the Cape of Good Hope is the most south westerly point of the African continent. The Cape Of Good Hope acquired its name from the first Portuguies salors who saw it as their "Good Hope" of access the east, and was later adopted by European sailors who said as they turned north for the first time.
Cape Town has many world famous land marks like, Table Mountain and the Cape Point/ Cape of Good Hope. You will be equal distance from these locations and the same distance to the Stellenbosch wine route, the New FIFA World Cup soccer stadium, and just 10 mins drive to many other attractions. Staying at Moon Bay Guest House and Villa will mean a short easy trip to all these locations without the worry of being far from home.
The Western Cape has its own unique flora and fauna. Moon Bay Guest House is located amongst this flora and fauna. It can also be studied in detail at the world famous botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch, just 20 minutes drive away.
South Africa weather -- As we are south of the equator, our seasons are the opposite of those in Europe. Summer falls between November and March, with the peak summer months being December and January. Winter is between May and August. Most of South Africa enjoys a pleasant, warm climate year-round. Annual average rainfall is less than 10 inches in the west of South Africa. Cape Town and the southernmost part of the Western Cape has a Mediterranean type climate, with mild, changeable winters and a warm to hot summer. Winter can bring rain showers around Cape Town and the west coast, but these pass to bring warm days and cool nights, without frost, in the costal areas.
Cape Town / Fish Hoek area
Fish Hoek is a beach village located next to the fishing village of Kalk Bay on the Cape Peninsula half way between Cape Town centre and Cape Point .The safe bathing beach in Fish Hoek is considered to be the best bathing beach in Cape Town. From the Guest House and all along the coast you can view Southern Right Whales in the season when they come to breed and calf from end of July to early November
We are a short drive (10 Mins) from 5 of the oldest and most famous wine farms in South Africa at Constantia. some are open 7 days a week and all offer wines for tasting and purchase at prices not seen in the UK. We are also just 10 mins drive from 4 top class golf courses and one you will see from Moon Bay across the valley. You can play 9 holes there, as a visitor, from just 7 pounds.
At Moon Bay Guest House and Villa you are located on some of the most stunning drives in all of Africa, including Chapman's Peak Drive and the Peninsular drive to the Cape Point nature reserve. At this nature reserve you will see various African buck, baboons and other wild animals walking freely.
You will be able to take these world class drives traveling into the City, going to the waterfront, and if attending the FIFA 2010 soccer stadium and event - they are all just 30 mins drive away. The whale watching in season (end of July to early November) - this is free - and you can visit the world famous penguins just 10 mins drive away where you can walk amongst them at no charge, or for a small fee go to the information centre for a written guide and walk.. You can also visit Seal Island, from Simon’s Town, 10 mins drive away. On seal island, a 20 min trip by boat, there are 74,000 Cape Fur Seals living on this island and it is also where the National Geographic captured the great white shark breaching in some dramatic documentaries. This is the only location in Africa where they breach the water. These trips to the Island are from 16 UK pounds. You can also do a separate trip where you get into a shark cage to visit the great white sharks in their natural habitat, these trips also leave from Simon's Town harbour.
There are other unspoilt beaches such as the 8 kilometre 'Long Beach' on the Atlantic Ocean, 5 mins from the house. In a one hour trip around the peninsula you can pass through some of the best views in all of Africa, viewing the warm currents of the Indian Ocean meeting the cold waters of the Atlantic. For small fees you can learn to surf, para surf, wind surf, kayak , horse riding on the beach, or pay nothing, and watch others do this. Professional tennis and golf coaching is available in the village at fees well below any you would be able to find in Europe.
Or you can sit on the balconies and soak in the dramatic natural beauty of the views all around you. Watch the sun rise and find your spot to see the sun set.
At the fishing harbour in Kalk Bay and all the suronding areas we have many world class restaurants and bars who sell their food at a fraction of the prices you pay in Europe. There are dozens of restaurants and bars in the area, boasting every cuisine from fish and meat to Cape Malay and Cape Cuban. You can also buy fresh fish daily at whole sale prices, or rent a fishing rod and catch your own.
As well as local shops there is a large shopping mall just 5 mins away where you can watch a movie or buy anything you require.
