Sea and Rock, Camps Bay
About the home
The imposing tripartite Sea and Rock villa reflects its name in occupying a mountainside site with superb seascape views over Camps Bay. The dimensions of this commodious retreat are most generous, sleeping up to eighteen, especially in respect of expansive decking matching the adjoining interior floor space.
Pergolas, controlled-water fed pot planting and a large yin and yang-shaped Zen garden furnish what are essentially outdoor rooms. The design reflects the environmental textures of its rocky backdrop while maximising exterior living space and incorporating saltwater pools and jacuzzis.

Further details indoors:
The ingenious versatility of this six-bedroom villa/ one bedroom apartment is its ability to function as either three separate apartments, each sleeping six on self-contained floors, a main home and guest storey, each with its own pool and jacuzzi, or as one triple-level villa interconnected with and accessible from each level via steep stone steps. The design is wrought in indigenous natural materials of signature ‘balau’ timber decking and in the interior travertine tiling and caesar-stone. The villa is environmentally-friendly in minimising water use by means of an electronically controlled watering system, rain-water tank irrigation recycling and rooftop solar panels.
On the first level above the garage and storage rooms, the guest suite/master bedroom opens onto a very large deck and unique feature of a swirling pebble and grass-effect Zen-style garden of cacti plants and quartz boulders. Fluorescent spot-lights after dark, as with the heated rim-flow pool above, lead you up wooden step tiers to a plunge pool. The night time effect is particularly picturesque as ultra-violet lighting transforms the pools into glowing jewels. Alternatively, you can take a relaxing dip in the nearby Jacuzzi. The first floor apartment sleeps four with a king-size bed and a double-sleeper couch in the lounge while the kitchen has full-specification. The lounge boasts a large LCD TV, DVD, CD and iPod players. There is a king-size bed, generous wardrobe space and an en-suite bathroom.
The apartment is rendered in clean whites, aquamarine, sea-greens and shades of brown while touches of green and blue mosaic, glass tiles underscore the maritime theme. Furnishing of raw-silk curtains are used throughout the villa to dress the patio window doors while original Ian van Zyl African wildlife paintings are positioned to maximum effect.
The sense of abundant space is apparent on the second floor under a high-vaulted ceiling over two floors. The full-spec kitchen (five ring gas hob, double electric oven, double fridge freezer, ice dispenser etc.) on an upper mezzanine level has an open-plan island with bar stools, ideal as an informal dining space. The rear extends to a scullery, pantry and laundry utility area. From here also you can reach the upper storey by means of additional stairs. Distinctive large metallic animal horns forming door handles on the entrance door catch the eye. A large glass dining table and chairs upholstered in faux animal hides dominates an elevated mezzanine level. A lower level forms an informal living space featuring a pebble-bed gas fireplace and leather suite of furniture. Large glass sliding patio doors with wooden louvred panels (Ameircan shutters) give onto the exterior.
Home-entertainment comes by way of LCD TV, DVD, CD and iPod players. Outside the large deck accommodates a heated rim-flow infinity pool, terracotta-mosaic dining tables and wooden patio furniture inviting alfresco entertaining with gas barbecue area.
The third storey has striking crystal and silver chandeliers. An open-plan bar area with several drinks fridges is intended to cater for the entertainment lounge and dining areas and complement the indoor barbecue. Mahogany and caesar-stone finishes predominate in this full-specification utilities area of adjacent scullery, pantry and laundry rooms. The sense of light and space is enhanced through large picture glass panels high in the walls giving framed mountain views. The living-room is designed round a large L-shaped kudu-leather couch with formal mahogany dining table. Wall-to-wall concertina-folding patio doors with louvred windows/ American shutters give on to the exterior. The pergola outside is an attractive touch providing welcome plant shade as an extension to the expansive deck.
In short, all bedrooms have air-conditioners and enjoy sea-views with direct decking access while having LCD TVs installed with digital DSTV channels in common with the communal living areas. All bathrooms and kitchens have underfloor heating and heated towel-rails. There is garaging for four cars with off-street parking for a further five. A ‘Paradox’ security system serves all combinations of rented alternatives with separate alarm and entry systems. There is also a separate service entrance for staff and maintenance.
Further details outdoors:
Uninterrupted coastal seascapes extend here to Robben Island while to the rear and across the bay the Twelve Apostles and Lion’s Head loom as paragliders ride the thermals. The three bedroom suites all have direct balcony access via glass patio doors and share raw silk curtains and muted beach tones. Two rooms share a common bathroom with a jacuzzi-bathtub, double wash basins and large shower units against mosaic walls. The third en suite bedroom here can be separated off as a self-contained master suite with kitchenette, lounge and double-sleeper couch.
You can take in the stunning views from this vantage point from the al fresco dining table or assorted sun lounger furniture arrangements. Again, there is an enticing jacuzzi here from which to survey the seascapes below. There are three bedrooms and a separate study/ office area with 3Gb broadband wi-fi capacity. All bedrooms have ample wardrobe space set against high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling patio doors giving on to the decking terrace. The en suite master has a king-sized bed, generous walk-in wardrobe space and an invitingly sumptuous silver-suede chaise-longue to recline on. Pearl, silver black and white tones predominate complemented by a striking zebra artwork. The travertine tiled, glass mosaic bathroom accommodates an elevated stone bathtub.

The Western Cape region

To the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 he may have rounded a ‘Cape of Storms’ occasioning a slick aspirational rebranding by his king as ‘The Cape of Good Hope’ but few would argue with Sir Francis Drake’s 1580 assertion that South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ is ‘’the most stately thing and the fairest cape’’ that he had seen ‘’in the whole circumference of the earth.’’
The descent approach to Cape Town Airport overflies much of the spine of mountains that stir the senses as Table Mountain comes in to view and culminates in a unique geography where two oceans clash in a peninsula landscape of unrivalled diversity of flora and variety of indigenous animals. From the famed Kirstenbosch’s Botanical Garden’s cyclad tree ferns, fynbos and king proteas to False Bay’s breaching great white sharks and breeding southern right whales and even the opportunity to swim with penguins at Boulders Beach, the only mainland colony outside Antarctica, Cape Town offers adventurous nature lovers unique and extraordinary sights.
...The 'city bowl' as bordered by Devil's Peak, Table Mountain and Lion's Head leading down to the vibrant Victoria & Alfred waterfront harbour, the Atlantic Seaboard of idyllic enclaves of Llandudno, Clifton and Camps Bay beaches nestling under the National Park peaks of the Twelve Apostles mountain range...and on to Cape Point from Camps Bay via the Chapman's Peak Drive meandering corniche; all have become recognisable Cape Town landmarks and must-see itinerary destinations.
As with Vancouver, Hong Kong and Rio, Cape Town boasts a dramatic scenery of mountains meeting natural harbours yet comparisons are odious while only Table Mountain offers hikers rewarding trails and the mysterious atmospheric transformation of tumbling cloud afforded by the mesmerising 'table cloth.' Views from the upper cable car station 1000 meter vantage point across the city are momentous as are those of full 360 degree panoramas from the neighbouring Lion's Head peak across Signal Hill to the full extent of the Twelve Apostles sandstone sentinel range overlooking Camps Bay. Paragliders coast the thermals from this lofty perch gliding on apparent thin air as they manoeuvre at leisure to float down lazily to the inviting beaches below.
The Cape Town / Camps Bay area
Cape Town has some of the finest activities and experiences that a visitor will ever witness.
As you make the pilgrimage to the world-famous ‘shark alley’ off Gansbaai (or False Bay) you may feel butterflies as to precisely what you’ve let yourself in for Any nervousness is soon dispelled by the sheer adrenaline rush as these magnificent creatures hove into view spectacularly around the boat; an unforgettable sight imprinted on the mind. If you are lucky, you may even witness a breaching shark rocketing completely out of the water seizing a Cape fur seal.
The prospect of swimming with penguins off Simon Town’s Boulders Beach is an equally unique Cape Town experience as here is the world’s only mainland bird colony outside the Antarctic. A similarly curious if altogether gentler experience, surreal even as the birds are known to covet beach towels and stray bucket and spades.
Venerable supersonic jets can provide you with an astounding G-force rush above Cape Town while helicopter flips over Table Mountain and the peninsula coastline landmarks on the way to the winelands are unforgettable. The sight of bathers and yachts far below on gold and cobalt sun-drenched beaches and mirror seas entice you down for a closer look. One way to really survey the scene and interact with the landscape is to ride the thermals down from Lion’s Head on a paraglider to land between Camps Bay and Clifton beaches. Riders surge around the head of the mountain as if suspended in thin air whilst manoevering down at their leisure in descending at their own pace to draw out the sheer joy of flight set against a picture-postcard setting.
Should you find yourself in need of a gourmet lunchtime meal the Biscuit Mill’s Saturday food market in a gentrified complex Woodstock is firmly on the visitor’s map. The finest international and local produce is highly recommended offering everything from Cambodian curry, home-recipe Hungarian ghoulash and authentic Dutch waffles to local barbecue/braai meats, gourmet sausages and European-style cheeses and chutneys, oysters and delicious speciality ostrich burgers. Also, fine organic beers, ciders and excellent local Cape wines can be sampled. The best time to go is between midday and 2pm. There are also summer fashions, jewellery and souvenir objet d’art to be scoured through in the neighbouring arts and crafts shops not to mention the new Sunday antiques fair.
