The Western Cape region

To the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 he may have rounded a ‘Cape of Storms’ occasioning a slick aspirational rebranding by his king as ‘The Cape of Good Hope’ but few would argue with Sir Francis Drake’s 1580 assertion that South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ is ‘’the most stately thing and the fairest cape’’ that he had seen ‘’in the whole circumference of the earth.’’
The descent approach to Cape Town Airport overflies much of the spine of mountains that stir the senses as Table Mountain comes in to view and culminates in a unique geography where two oceans clash in a peninsula landscape of unrivalled diversity of flora and variety of indigenous animals. From the famed Kirstenbosch’s Botanical Garden’s cyclad tree ferns, fynbos and king proteas to False Bay’s breaching great white sharks and breeding southern right whales and even the opportunity to swim with penguins at Boulders Beach, the only mainland colony outside Antarctica, Cape Town offers adventurous nature lovers unique and extraordinary sights.
...The 'city bowl' as bordered by Devil's Peak, Table Mountain and Lion's Head leading down to the vibrant Victoria & Alfred waterfront harbour, the Atlantic Seaboard of idyllic enclaves of Llandudno, Clifton and Camps Bay beaches nestling under the National Park peaks of the Twelve Apostles mountain range...and on to Cape Point from Camps Bay via the Chapman's Peak Drive meandering corniche; all have become recognisable Cape Town landmarks and must-see itinerary destinations.
As with Vancouver, Hong Kong and Rio, Cape Town boasts a dramatic scenery of mountains meeting natural harbours yet comparisons are odious while only Table Mountain offers hikers rewarding trails and the mysterious atmospheric transformation of tumbling cloud afforded by the mesmerising 'table cloth.' Views from the upper cable car station 1000 meter vantage point across the city are momentous as are those of full 360 degree panoramas from the neighbouring Lion's Head peak across Signal Hill to the full extent of the Twelve Apostles sandstone sentinel range overlooking Camps Bay. Paragliders coast the thermals from this lofty perch gliding on apparent thin air as they manoeuvre at leisure to float down lazily to the inviting beaches below.
The Cape Town / Bantry Bay area
Cape Town has some of the finest activities and experiences that a visitor will ever witness.
As you make the pilgrimage to the world-famous ‘shark alley’ off Gansbaai (or False Bay) you may feel butterflies as to precisely what you’ve let yourself in for Any nervousness is soon dispelled by the sheer adrenaline rush as these magnificent creatures hove into view spectacularly around the boat; an unforgettable sight imprinted on the mind. If you are lucky, you may even witness a breaching shark rocketing completely out of the water seizing a Cape fur seal.
The prospect of swimming with penguins off Simon Town’s Boulders Beach is an equally unique Cape Town experience as here is the world’s only mainland bird colony outside the Antarctic. A similarly curious if altogether gentler experience, surreal even as the birds are known to covet beach towels and stray bucket and spades.
Venerable supersonic jets can provide you with an astounding G-force rush above Cape Town while helicopter flips over Table Mountain and the peninsula coastline landmarks on the way to the winelands are unforgettable. The sight of bathers and yachts far below on gold and cobalt sun-drenched beaches and mirror seas entice you down for a closer look. One way to really survey the scene and interact with the landscape is to ride the thermals down from Lion’s Head on a paraglider to land between Camps Bay and Clifton beaches. Riders surge around the head of the mountain as if suspended in thin air whilst manoevering down at their leisure in descending at their own pace to draw out the sheer joy of flight set against a picture-postcard setting.
Should you find yourself in need of a gourmet lunchtime meal the Biscuit Mill’s Saturday food market in a gentrified complex Woodstock is firmly on the visitor’s map. The finest international and local produce is highly recommended offering everything from Cambodian curry, home-recipe Hungarian ghoulash and authentic Dutch waffles to local barbecue/braai meats, gourmet sausages and European-style cheeses and chutneys, oysters and delicious speciality ostrich burgers. Also, fine organic beers, ciders and excellent local Cape wines can be sampled. The best time to go is between midday and 2pm. There are also summer fashions, jewellery and souvenir objet d’art to be scoured through in the neighbouring arts and crafts shops not to mention the new Sunday antiques fair.
