The Florida region

The house is on a small lake called Ceitus Lake which in turn is connected by canal to the mangroves (tropical trees with roots propelling into the water) and in turn to the ocean. You can rent a boat from Four Winds Marina on Pine Island and they do full day, half day, three quarter day and weekly rentals. You will see dolphins, manatee (large round tropical aquatic mammal), fabulous waterfowl (a bird watchers delight), secluded beaches and delightful seaside restaurants; truly a perfect vacation paradise!

Bird wildlife abounds on and above the waterway next to Lady of the Lake. A local Osprey “Ozzy” loves to perch on the huge palm tree by the lake and dive into the water for his dinner. Relax on the dock or enjoy kayaking while seeing Osprey, White or Brown Pelican, White Ibis, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Yellow Crowned Night Heron, Green Heron, Roseate Spoonbill and Anhinga. Take a trip by car or boat or visit The Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge to see Tricolored Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Reddish Egret, American Oysterchatcher and Pied-Bill Grebe.

Lady of the Lake is located in Northwest Cape Coral. This is an ideal Gulf access location because the congestion of South Cape Coral and Miserable Mile (another Gulf access) is avoided. If you rent a boat from Pine Island Marina or in the town of Matlacha it would be 1/2 hour ride to Sanibel.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are wonderful to explore and also Northbound to Boca Grand, Cayo Costa and the island of Cabbage Key. You must have lunch on Cabbage Key!

Cape Coral

There are beautiful beaches in the Cape Coral area. Cape Coral Beach is a small charming beach that is only 20 minutes from the house. There is Fort Myers Beach that is many miles long, has shops and restaurants and is the full beach experience. It is about 45 minutes away. If you prefer unspoiled beaches, take the ferry to Cayo Costa State Park Island and you will have miles of beach all to yourself.

Ding Darling wildlife refuge on Sanibel Island is also a wonderful outing.

The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations.

J. N. "Ding" Darling is one of over 550 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge was created to safeguard and enhance the pristine wildlife habitat of Sanibel Island, to protect endangered and threatened species, and to provide feeding, nesting, and roosting areas for migratory birds. Today, the refuge provides important habitat to over 220 species of birds.

A political cartoonist with an eye toward conservation, Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling was instrumental in the effort to block the sale of a parcel of environmentally valuable land to developers on Sanibel Island. At Darling's urging, President Harry S. Truman signed an Executive Order creating the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945.

The refuge was renamed in 1967 in honor of the pioneer conservationist. The refuge consists of over 6,400 acres of mangrove forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes, and West Indian hardwood hammocks. Approximately 2,800 acres of the refuge are designated by Congress as a Wilderness Area.

There are also Burrowing Owls, scrub jays, butterflies and many other animals that can be viewed at 9 locations which include the Rotary Park Environment Center, Cape Coral Public Library, Sirenia Vista Park, Strausser BMX Sports Complex, Saratoga Lake Park, Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, Yacht Club Park, Pelican Sports Complex and Seahawk Park. Free maps of these areas can be obtained at Rotary Park; Rotino Senior Center; Four Seasons Park; Cape Coral Library, Chamber of Commerce, Cape Coral City Council Office; Cape Coral Museum and Gifts; 4 Mile Cove Eco Park; Veterinary, Cape Realty, Iberia Bank; Hampton Inn; Holiday Inn; Casa Loma: LCEC and the Cape Coral Breeze Office.

Check for Nature of Cape Coral Bus Tours in an air conditioned bus or a Rotary Park Butterfly House Tour at Rotary Park. You can register for the bus tour at 239-549-4606.

Sun Splash Family Water Park is located in Cape Coral and is open from mid March to late September (15 minute drive).

There is also the Shell Factory (15 minute drive) which houses a zoo with alligators, etc. as well as amusements such as bumper boats.

The Edison Ford Museum in Fort Myers offers a glimpse into the lives of two amazing individuals.

Joe Stonis Park is located at 3444 Ceitus Parkway in the Northwest section of Cape Coral, west of Burnt Store Road and north of Pine Island Road. It is 1.5 miles from Lady of the Lake. The park features picnic shelters with BBQ grills, a fitness trail and wellness trail for all ability levels, lighted tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, restrooms, horseshoe pits, two playgrounds and a one-acre lake.

Jim Jeffers Park is located at 2810 SW 3rd Lane Cape Coral and is 1.5 miles from Lady of the Lake. A nice bike ride!! Park hours of operation: 8:00 a.m. to sunset, year round. Amenities Include: A mega structure playground, four soccer fields, softball field, tennis courts, basketball courts, a three-acre lake, walking paths, picnic shelters, restrooms, concession building, pavilion, bike racks, drinking fountains and lighting.

The "back in time" fishing/artist town of Matlacha is a 5 minute drive from the house and has great art galleries, souvenir shops and restaurants.

"Lovely peaceful location, comfortable if a little tired."

We spent two weeks here and the location was lovely, I started every day by visiting the deck to see which fish had come by. It was such a nice place I was quite happy just to sit here for hours with a good book.

The house had everything we needed except a juicer, but we bought one from the local supermarket.

Overall very pleasant stay, the deck and pool will be greatly missed.
