The New England / Massachusetts region
There are times when you need to escape. Forget your worries. Act like a kid again. Those times call for a trip to the Cape or one of the islands.
Each locale offers sun-splashed beaches and a laid-back attitude, yet all are unique in their own right.
Famous for its rolling dunes and gable-roofed, grey-shingled houses, Cape Cod is where you'll find outdoor activities and loads of fun family attractions.
Take the time to find yourself on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, where all that matters is what matters to you.
Cape Cod area
The Cape Cod lies south of Boston on the East Coast of the United States.
In the mid-19th century Cape Cod became a popular summer vacation destination for wealthy families living in Boston and Providence. Today Cape Cod is the premier vacation resort in New England.
Cape Cod is the place for wide, sandy beaches with beautiful dunes, lighthouses, sea captains’ homes, fishing villages, seafood (particularly oysters, clams, and lobsters), cranberries, and numerous recreational opportunities.
Cape Cod’s beaches are considered among the best in the world, especially those along the Cape Cod National Seashore, a 40-mile stretch of unspoiled sandy beach in Outer Cape Cod. With 559.6 miles of unspoiled coastline, Cape Cod offers many beautiful sandy beaches for you to enjoy. Beaches on the Cape Cod Bay north side may have cooler water temperatures than the warmer waters of the south facing beaches of Nantucket Sound.
Cape Cod tests all public bathing beach waters. Monitoring results from previous seasons indicate exceptional water quality on Cape Cod, and the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches are part of the Blue Wave Campaign for quality.
Water sports are very popular on the Cape. Canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, snorkelling, swimming - find the best way to make your perfect day! Perhaps, you will take a whale watching excursion, enjoy a few hours of beach combing, and go fishing by your own or on a chartered cruise.
Cape Cod is a unique place for nature lovers, bird-watchers, hikers and whale watchers, sailors and surf casters. In 1961 a significant portion of the east-facing Atlantic coast of Cape Cod was made part of the Cape Cod National Seashore by President John F. Kennedy. Large portions are open to the public.
Although the Cape experiences a tourist explosion each summer, Cape Cod is virtually a year-round resort. No matter the season, Cape Cod beaches can always be walked, the bike trails enjoyed, and golf courses played.
The geography of Cape Cod resembles a flexed arm that thrusts out into the Atlantic Ocean. It owes its origin to glaciers that were active in the area. Over time, these glacier deposits became reshaped by waves and nearby ocean currents. Cape Cod is divided into a number of different sections. Each section or town on the Cape has something unique about it – natural beauty, the arts, history and recreational pursuits. The Cape is about 70 miles long and is often subdivided into six main regions: Upper-Cape, Mid-Cape, Lower-Cape, Outer-Cape and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
