The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
It bills itself as "the other south of France", but those who come to Aquitaine will be astounded by the richness and diversity of its geography. The coastline of the Atlantic coast is the dominant physical feature of this vast region, where you'll be able to discover Bordeaux, Périgord, the Basque Country, the Pyrénées and Europe's largest forest (The Landes Forest) among other things.
Let's start with the pristine beaches of Aquitaine: they are the only ones in France where surfing is possible - in fact, that's where the best surfing is available for the whole of Europe! The sand dunes, including the Dune du Pyla, are the highest in Europe. The Bay of Arcachon is home to a beach resort that became popular in the 19th century, and is very lively in the summer.
The Bordelais is a 1000 square km area around the city of Bordeaux and is, along with Burgundy, France's largest wine-producing region (producing some 870 million bottles of red, white and rosé wines in 1998). Bordeaux has over 5,000 chateaux (not necessarily royal or palatial residences, but properties where grapes are raised and wine produced). Bordelais offers a quiet retreat, and its flat layout is ideal for golf courses, some of the best in France being located there.
Aquitaine's capital, Bordeaux is a thriving port city on the Garonne River with beautiful 18th-century mansions and architecture, including its Grand Theatre by architect Victor Louis, excellent shopping and numerous cultural events, such as the traditional May Music Festival.
Bordeaux is particularly well known for its surrounding wine-growing region. The vineyards of Bordeaux with their Margaux, Médoc, Sauternes and St. Emilion wines are leaders in their fields in an area where many other excellent wines are produced. Most chateaux open their doors to allow visits to their cellars and wine tastings.
The varied Aquitaine region includes not only the prehistoric caves, villages and rolling river valleys of the Dordogne and the Bordeaux vineyards, but also the rocky Pyrénées mountain chain, the Basque country with its beautiful beaches, excellent surfing and picturesque fishing villages, the flat forest land of the Landes and the medieval castles and villages in Lot-et-Garonne.
Remember this is a region of seafood – fresh and cheap in every market for miles inland – and around Bordeaux, some of the world's top vineyards!
Cap-Ferret area
Two medieval towns are a short drive from the House - Penne D'Agenais and Pujols with their cobblestoned streets, markets and fairs: Wednesdays organic market (Villeneuve) - Saturdays - huge farmers market in Villeneuve town square - Fridays - Farmers markets Port de Penne During the summer months, there are several night markets in the area with tables and chairs laid out in village squares and farmers cooking their own produce.
The Ferme du Lacy by the river Penne produces and sells the world famous Prunes d'Agen and there are several local vineyards and orchards in the area. For something a little different, guests can visit a local snail farm or even a beehive in Penne, the honey from which can be enjoyed at the manoir. The historic city of Cahors with its ancient bridge and wine tasting and Rocamandour with its breathtaking church built into the side of a mountain and its well-loved monkey forest.
The house is also 1 1/2 hours drive from the coast and Andorra. Pleasure boats can be hired form Port de Penne (river Lot). Fantastic dining can be expected in France's gastronomic region, particular favourites are La Maison sur la Place in Penne D'Agenais and La Toute Blanche in Pujols.
Villeneve Golf Club is nearby which has a very good restaurant. Also, 10km north of Villeneuve is the reputable Castelnaud de Gratcombe course. Horse riding and fishing are all within 20 minutes of the house.
