The Catalunia region
Catalonien has its own identity and culture. The Catalan country side is rugged with a romantic coast surrounded by pine woods and lovely bays of fine sand. It enjoys a mediterranean climate. Proud of its artistic heritage the area was home to artists like Miro, Gaudi and Dali.
Barcelona itself is a feast of culture and architecture from the mellow atmosphere of Las Ramblas to the modernised waterfront.
The Pyrenees, on the french border (approx. 150km) with the well known country of Andorra (duty free) as also a point of interest .
The coastal villages, some of them with a long fishing tradition, like Tossa de Mar or Blanes offered a lot of excellent fish restaurants to choose from.
TOSSA DE MAR
Tossa de Mar is a historical and cultural coastal city on the southern Costa Brava with a beautiful medieval old town.
The town of Tossa de Mar is characterized by its almost entirely preserved medieval city walls and watchtowers dating back to the 12th century. Take a walk through the heart of the Vila Vella, The Old Town of Tossa, and you will discover many beautiful houses and winding alleyways.
There is much more to see in Tossa de Mar: the lighthouse, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the steep coastline and the town of Tossa and the ruin of the late gothic EsglesiaVella de Sant Vicenç used as a venue for concerts.
In this town you can also enjoy the beautiful and expansive beach Playa Gran. Within the town boundaries, there are other smaller beaches: Playa Mar Menuda which borders on to the main beach and the wind sheltered Cala Codolar which lies below the walls of the Old Town.
The coast of Tossa de Mar lends is ideal for diving.
Blanes is located in the gateway of the Costa Brava, the start of which is marked by Sa Palomera rock. Along its four-kilometer-long coastline, cliffs alternate with quiet coves.
To a certain extent Blanes has retained its fishing tradition. Particularly in the small lanes opposite the Sa Palomera Peninsula, you can still enjoy the flair of the old fishing town. It is also worth taking the time to watch the fishermen as they arrive in and leave the harbour or attend the traditional fish auction in the harbour.
One of the highlights of the town are the two most important botanic gardens of Spain: Mar i Murtra and Pinya de Rosa. Here you can marvel at Mediterranean and exotic plant species, go for a walk, relax and enjoy a beautiful sea view in a beautiful natural setting.
In the town we must point out the remains of the castle of Sant Joan and a monumental site with Gothic buildings from the 14th and 15th century. Other interesting monuments include the Gothic fountain, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, the sanctuary of Sagrada Imagen del Vilar, located four kilometres away from Blanes; and the chapel of Santa Bárbara.
In Blanes you can also enjoy the beaches of Treumal, Santa Francesc, Santa Ana, Blanes and S'Abanell.
This fishing town is also renowned for its International Firework Competition, celebrated in the town's yearly festivities. It is one of the best-known competitions in the Mediterranean.
Cala Canyelles is one of the most beautiful areas of the Costa Brava, situated 2 km north of Lloret de Mar (with plenty of night life) and 6 km south of the charming Tossa de Mar .
