The South East England region

Situated in Kent, the 'Garden of England', Canterbury has been of historical and cultural importance since the Bronze age. Following occupation by the Romans, Canterbury became the centre of Christian England and after the assassination of Thomas Beckett, evolved into one of the most important European cities of Pilgrimage as captured in Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales'.

Kent also offers attractions such as Leeds Castle, Howletts Zoo, beaches at Whitstable and Herne Bay plus horseriding and walks through its woodlands. London is also only an hours drive or train journey away and so perfect for a day out.

Canterbury has something for everyone, from the Roman walls surrounding the city to the ornate medieval buildings and most recently, the newly built Marlowe Theatre (named after the Shakesperian actor Christopher Marlowe, a past resident of the city). Canterbury has a number of fine restuarants and bars as well as museums, theatre and the Cathedral.

In addition to Canterbury's many attractions, the surrounding area also offers many activities. The local seaside town of Whitstable is famous for its quaint clapboard houses and oyster festival plus its fantastic seafood restaurants. Whitstable and Herne Bay both offer unspoilt beaches and swimming. A visit to Leeds castle or Howletts Zoo are also enjoyable day's out with a picnic, or for the more adventurous, there are many ancient woodlands to explore by foot.
