"The House at Plucks Gutter"
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Dating from at least 1622 when it was first recorded as an Ale House and Ferry. the Dog and Duck Cottage at Plucks Gutter , is a 400 year old ferry cottage in rural East Kent which offers a safe and tranquil setting in the Kentish Countryside but with the added advantage of an equally remote pub just across the road...!
Close to Ramsgate, Sandwich and Canterbury from where the high speed train to London takes just 59 minutes. Great cycling, walking and fishing on the Kentish River Stour. Kent International Airport is just 10 minutes drive with day trips to Amsterdam possible. The Channel Posts are about 30 minutes away so day trips to France and/or Belgium are all achievable as well - we sometimes have discount vouchers for ferry crossing.
Monday to Saturday the local bus [Stagecoach East Kent #11] runs about every two hours between Canterbury and Westwood Cross Shopping Centre [Broadstairs] from early morning until about 1800 via lots of pretty villages with quaint old pubs - great for a pub crawl...! and via Minster Station for trains to London, Canterbury, Ramsgate, Sandwich etc.
Parking for two cars is available on site.
ABOUT THE PROPERTY:
The cottage sleeps four in one king bed [Master Bedroom with WC, sink etc] and one double bed [2nd. Bedroom]. Everything else is on the ground floor including a farmhouse kitchen with a Rangmaster and Belfast Sink , lounge and dining room/conservatory. Also, the main bathroom with jacuzzi/steam cabinet, separate shower room and toilet.
As this is my home when I am here and I enjoy cooking and entertaining you'll find spice jars, herbs in the garden and oils and vinegars in the larder - who knows you might even be barbecuing something you caught from the quay outside - we get grey mullet, roach, bream - that's if the cormorants and seals haven't got there first..! Oh and yes, if you want to moor your boat you can - if you want a trip on the River we can normally arrange that with the Sandwich River Bus.
Fishing is available from the Quay at the front of the cottage subject to standard UK Closed Season Rules (16 March to 16 June).
PETS POLICY: We have an unfenced garden leading directly to a tidal river and stream - we are suitable for [wet] dogs or other pets - providing you dry them off once they head for the river and all that glorious mud. Don';t worry we have a bulter sink in the garden to wash off muddy boots and dogs..!
SMOKING POLICY: We are happy to accommodate smokers but request that you limit smoking to designated rooms to ensure the comfort of following guests.
WHAT'S INCLUDED: The price you see is what you pay... all Bedding, towels and initial and end of stay cleaning is included, of course. We do not charge for utilities but ask that you replace or pay for any coal or logs used.
BREAKAGES POLICY: As you would expect thefts, breakages and extreme damage or cleaning will be charged for. We take a small deposit to cover breakages for clients staying with pets.
CHECK-IN: Keys need to be collected from behind the bar of the Dog and Duck Pub which is opposite the cottage [please printout a booking confirmation to show the staff] any time from 1600 until pub closing [normally 2230 or later] - if you stop-off for lunch at the pub you might get the key earlier..!
CHECK-OUT: 1000: but we are flexible if you tell us in advance and it doesn't stop us from turning around the cottage for the next guests. We reserve the reserve the right to charge a late checkout fee of £20 per hour or part thereof to cover time we pay our cleaner to wait for you if you have not arranged in advance to stay past 1030.
If you have any special needs please let me know - we can rearrange the cottage to arrange a downstairs bedroom so everything can be on one level our layout is wheelchair friendly [but the cottage is not adapted]. The pub is wheel chair accessible.

Plucks Gutter is a small hamlet in Kent, England where the Little Stour and Great Stour rivers meet. During the Middle Ages, the two rivers met the Wantsum Channel at Stourmouth, but the combined rivers now (called the River Stour downstream from Plucks Gutter) flow onward to the sea via Sandwich to Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate, leaving Plucks Gutter some six miles in a straight line and ten by river from the English Channel.
The hamlet is named after a Dutch Drainage Engineer called Ploeg, whose grave can be seen in All Saints Church, West Stourmouth. Ploeg being the Dutch for a plough, the hamlet almost certainly takes its origins from the Dutch Protestant tradition of draining marshland by creating a ploughed ditch. No doubt, the Dutchman was named after his craft.
Just a mile upstream from the Dog and Duck Inn Plucks Gutter is 'Blood Point', the scene of King Alfred's famous defeat of a Viking invasion force and often taken to be the Royal Navy's first successful engagement of an enemy. In 1821-23, a notorious North Kent Gang of smugglers made use of Pluck's Gutter. One account from a Revenue Customs Officer recalls how they travelled some fourteen miles, on foot, through Trenleypark Wood to Stodmarsh, Then via Grove Corner to Pluck's Gutter where they crossed the river by the ferry and onward northeast to Mount Pleasant near Acol then up to Marsh Bay – the former name for what is modern-day Westgate-on-Sea
There is a pretty riverside inn here with a holiday caravan and lodge park.
The old ferry cottage (the earlier pub) is the eponymous 'House at Plucks Gutter' and was the inspiration for the book of the same name by Manning Coles. The freeholder of the cottage has an obligation to provide services to any officer of one of 'His Majesty's Ships of War' lying in the Wantsum Channel as payment to the Crown for the rights to operate the ferry.
Fishing on the River is controlled by the Wantsum Angling Association and Plucks Gutter is a location for many fishing competitions. Pike, bream and roach are most commonly caught here. ducks, swans and kingfishers are commonly seen, as are representatives from a couple of local rowing clubs (including the University of Kent); most often undergoing medium- to long- distance inland water "steady state" training.
River trips from Sandwich run on request and the hamlet is served by local buses each day from Canterbury. The nearest railway station is at Birchington (4 miles walk) from where a taxi can be obtained.
Non-residential riverside moorings can be obtained from the Dog and Duck Inn or from the ferry cottage.

"Beautiful cottage and area - definitely coming again!"
The whole process of booking and planning our stay in this cottage was made easy by the very helpful and friendly owner - thank you.
The cottage is amazing! There is lots of room, big enough for a family holiday but was also perfect for our romantic anniversary weekend away. It's so beautiful and had everything we needed plus more - one of our favourite parts is the incredible jacuzzi/ shower!
The view of the river and countryside is lovely and so is the area around to walk in. It's a bit of a walk to the nearest village with shops but we enjoyed the walk and it's perfect that the local pub is so close - great place to eat with friendly staff and delicious food at a great price!
Would highly recommend this cottage and definitely planning on booking again.
Thank you, it was great having you to stay. We are always happy to help with groceries and stocking the larder before our guests visit us. Looking forward to having you stay again, Mike
