The South East England region
Sandwich is an ideal place to stay to explore the Kent coast as it is just a few miles to the famous castle and White Cliffs at Dover, beautiful beaches at Broadstairs, fantastic shopping at Canterbury as well as its historic cathedral and the lovely seaside towns of Deal and Margate. It is also just a 15 minute drive to the Port of Dover where you can hop on a ferry for a day in France or Belgium.
Famous for its plethora of beautiful sandy beaches and annual folk week, Broadstairs is an olde-worlde seaside resort which is a must on a sunny day. There are several beaches to choose from including Viking Bay which is in the main town and Joss and Botany Bays which are more secluded. Broadstairs also has many quirky shops and restaurants and is the home of the Charles Dickens Museum.
Canterbury is a beautiful city with many historic buildings, not least, the cathedral which is the oldest in England. Cantebury's diverse shops are housed in many of the city's oldest buildings and a river tour around the centre of town is one of the best ways to see the medieval architecture.
Sandwich is one of the best preserved medieval towns in England, it is also one of the ancient Cinque Ports which supplied ships and men to the British navy in the Middle Ages. Among its many attractions are narrow streets with half-timbered houses, the River Stour with its picturesque quay, famous golf courses, beautiful parks and a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs. All these amenities are within a two minute walk of Stour Cottage.
Within 50 yards, there is a lovely riverside park (pictured) which is ideal for a peaceful walk, and pubs, restaurants, bars, cafés, cinema, independent shops, ancient churches, the White Mill windmill and museum, farm shops and the railway station are all within an easy walk. Sandwich River Bus has been offering tours along the River Stour from Sandwich Quay since 1999. The Sandwich Harbour Master runs these tours with great enthusiasm and knowledge. Several different tours are available including one to go seal spotting at Ramsgate.
The shingle beach at Sandwich Bay lies 2 miles away and many nearby historic sites including Richborough Roman fort and amphitheatre, and the fascinating castles at Deal, Walmer and Dover are in the care of English Heritage. The White Cliffs of Dover (10 miles) enjoy worldwide fame and day trips to Europe are easily accessible.
The 3 champiosnhip golf courses of Royal St. Georges, Princes and the Royal Cinqueports are located along Sandwich Bay. It is a very pleasant walk from Sandwich Bay along to the next town, Deal, another historic town with much for the visitor. Deal is the nearest town to Sandwich and is definitely worth visiting with two castles, pier, long promenade, childrens paddling pool, Timeball Tower, independent shops and numerous independent shops and restaurants. Deal is an old-fashioned seaside town which is completely uncommercialised, a joy to visit.
