The South East England region

East Kent really has it all: A medieval cathedral city, easy day trips to France, quaint ports and seaside towns, the amazing Dover castle and the war time command centres in Dover cliffs; a huge choice of sandy and pebble beaches, rolling hills and secret chalk valleys along with the marshes and wide open spaces of the Isle of Thanet.

Kent is known as the Garden of England and this is evident as you drive through the county, you will see large numbers of orchards full of apples, pears, plums, cherries and apricots, fields of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries and of course hop gardens for brewing beer. There are also an increasing number of vineyards being planted.

Faversham has one of the oldest breweries in the country, Shepherd Neame, and it is possible to take a tour of the brewery. There is a Hop Festival in the autumn.

Whitstable is famous for it's oysters and each July there is an Oyster Festival in the town

Canterbury, as well as all it's history, there are Roman remains and of course the beautiful Cathedral, has a cultural two week festival at the end of October with music, theatre and ballet.

No-one can guarantee the english weather! However here in Kent we do tend to be luckier with less rain and more sun than many parts of the country

Be inspired by a visit to Canterbury cathedral and the medieval streets of the old city. Explore the many walks over the south downs and valleys in and around Canterbury including the old Pilgrims' Way which passes just half a mile from our cottage. For going to the seaside then we are ideally placed so that you can visit the south coast; Dover castle for example or the Royal port at Ramsgate and the bustling seaside town of Broadstairs, or on the north coast (within 30 minutes) there is the famous oyster fishery at Whitstable. For evenings out there is the elegant and modern Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury or the Gulbenkian Theatre and cult film venue at the University of Kent at canterbury, along with a huge variety of high end restaurants and bustling bars in the city.
