Home description
An attached oast situated in the heart of hop growing country on a road facing orchards and with scenic views, yet close to Faversham, a mediaeval town set amid orchards at the head of a creek and is still the brewing capital of Kent. You can take a guided tour of Shepherd Neame - Britains oldest brewer. Take a stroll through the heart of the brewery and see how beer is made from hop to hand pump! Contrast historic steam engines with the automated equipment used today and sample award winning ales and lagers. The Faversham Hop Festival takes place in September. Visit Brogdale Horticultural Trust just yards down the road from the Oast, where over 4000 varieties of fruit trees and plants exist in 150 acres of rural Kent also home to the National Fruit Collection. Don't miss Mount Ephraim Gardens and Belmont House built in the 18th century with gardens and parklands commanding stunning views over the beautiful Kent countryside.
Canterbury is a short drive away and is a very popular tourist destination boasting Canterbury Cathedral, mediaeval town centre and city walls, Kent County Cricket Ground, Canterbury Tales (Geoffrey Chaucer) tourist attraction, and very good recently upgraded shopping centre.
Beaches are quite close at Herne Bay and Whitstable. Whitstable is a popular weekend away destination for London's city dwellers and is noted for its oysters and fresh fish available from harbourside outlets. Herne Bay is reminiscent of the Victorian seaside town. Tesco and High Street shops 1.5 miles, Public Swimming Baths 1.5 miles, Pub 0.5 miles.

The South East England / Kent region
Kent is the garden of England and is famous for its distinctive Oast houses which were used to dry locally grown hops for beer making. Faversham is home to Englands oldest brewery, Shepheard & Neame, which dates from 1698 and is still very much a commercial enterprise run by a local family. Brogdale had the highest recorded UK temperature ever in 2003.
There are many quaint villages in the surrounding countryside with a wide selection of country pubs, restaurants and tea-rooms. This is a wonderful position for touring and visiting the historic towns Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Rochester, Whitstable and of course Pluckley (where Darling Buds of May was filmed). Macknades Farm is home to a huge range of local produce and also imports Italian fine foods, a must for food lovers. Local farmers markets are a weekly ocurrance and a French produce market is held in Faversham on the last weekend of each month.
