Blackfriars’ Cottage is a fabulous, fully-modernised Regency Cottage with 2 bedrooms and 2 ensuite bathrooms. It benefits from a bespoke solid oak kitchen and a pretty private courtyard with a garden room perfect for relaxing in. A short stroll from Canterbury’s historic Cathedral, new Marlowe Theatre, restaurants and shops, it is located in a quiet no-through road. The Cotttage is an ideal year-round destination combining chic city living with easy access to the beautiful Kent countryside and trendy north Kent coast.

Canterbury offers breathtaking heritage and stunning architecture, as well as a range of cultural and fun activities. From Cathedral visits, historic river tours to festivals and evening Ghost walks, Canterbury offers something for everyone to see and do.

The Cottage is an ideal base for visiting the surrounding Kent countryside and Coast. There are beautiful walks on the Downs and along the White Cliffs, castles and gardens to discover, animal parks, charming villages and beaches to enjoy. Get to know the characterful seaside towns and join in with the many Kentish festivals celebrating life in the county.

Blackfriars’ cottage is less than 10 minutes walk from Canterbury West train station and its high speed connections to London (56 min), the Olympic village (49 min), and even Paris on the Eurostar from nearby Ashford.

Canterbury is an ideal central base to explore all that Kent has to offer. There is culture and history in abundance, fun activities for all the family, a diversity of villages, coasts and countryside to explore and a wealth of opportunities to relax and enjoy the fantastic food and drink for which the ‘Garden of England’ is famous. Below is just a taste of what is on offer.

* Fun filled History
Kent is littered with Castles large and small, Towers, Stately Piles and Ruins, some have been painstakingly restored, others are still havens for children running amok!

Dover Castle renowned for its medieval Great Tower and interiors also hosts battle re-enactments and dragon slaying events. Digging a little deeper, you can discover the secret tunnels which housed World War 2 war rooms and hospitals and experience the new “state-of-the-art” Dunkirk evacuation.

Leeds Castle, the “loveliest Castle in the world”, as well as providing a beautiful setting for concerts and festivals also has an aviary, a fabulous yew maze and Knight’s Realm playground which will excite children and adults alike.

* Seaside specials
Canterbury is only a short drive or train ride from many unique seaside towns and beaches well served by coastal paths and cycle tracks. Beaches around the area all have their own character: pebbly to the North turning to sandy swathes as you go East.

Whitstable is the closest coastal town, with its working harbour, fishermens huts, thriving arts scene, eclectic shops and famous oyster festival, it’s a popular destination. Hire a bike and cycle there from Canterbury along the Crab and Winkle way which follows the route of Englands’ first passenger railway.

Margate, known for its traditional bucket and spade approach, amusement arcades and famous Wintergardens now also boasts the new Turner Gallery which is well worth visit.

Broadstairs is a lovely seaside town clustered around a harbour and beautiful sandy bay lined with strings of colourful beach huts. Home of Charles Dickens’ (somewhat unfairly named!) Bleak House this genteel place offers a taste of yesteryear with old bookshops, antique curios and best of all an art deco Italian ice cream parlour.

* Flora and Fauna
The area has many wildlife parks, farms and outstanding gardens.

Howletts Zoo is a real gem, as featured in the BBC programme “ROAR”. Featuring tigers, elephants, gorillas and an adorable walk with lemurs it offers fantastic proximity to the animals.
Walmer Castle and Gardens features a delightful moat garden in a beautiful coastal setting.

* Foodie Heaven
Kent, the Garden of England, is home to fantastic food producers and restaurants. Afternoon teas in historic country houses, oysters on the beach, beers made from local hops or grab a gourmet picnic from the much feted Good Shed market. There is always something delicious to enjoy.

Faversham, a lovely medieval market town is home to the Brogdale National fruit collection, once you’ve built up a thirst considering their 2000 varieties of apples, head to Britains oldest brewer -Shepherd Neame , where you can take a tour and sample a brew!

* Get up and Go
Kent offers world class Golfing and Cricket Venues as well as many opportunities for active days out from guided walking tours, cycling and sailing to riding and fishing and more.

The Royal St. Georges Golf Club located at Sandwich, with its stunning setting will be an irresistible draw to any golfer.
The St Lawrence Cricket Ground, easily accessible from Canterbury City centre hosts many matches throughout the season providing very English entertainment for all.

The Canterbury area

Canterbury has been a centre of pilgrimage for nearly a thousand years. At the heart of the city, Canterbury Cathedral along with Saint Augustine’s Abbey, is a Unesco World Heritage site and a stunningly beautiful place to explore. Stroll through the quiet cloisters, marvel at the architecture and contemplate the site of St. Thomas Becket’s martyrdom. Attending a concert, service or open day will give you a new insight into this unique historic building.

Take time to wander along the side streets, discover crooked medieval buildings, the ruined castle, the old town gaol and the Westgate Tower and gardens. Take a punt and float along the Stour on an historic river tour, or gird your loins for a spooky night time Ghost Walk. Hear Chaucers stories of the city at the Canterbury Tales and meet some more recent local characters – Bagpuss and Rupert the Bear at the city museum.

The city centre also offers an excellent range of shops, including the Whitefriars development and department stores. The Kings Mile, a few paces from the cottage is especially attractive with many quirky, independent shops and a regular Saturday market. The stunning new Marlowe theatre is also close at hand as are a plethora of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets.

Kent County Cricket ground is sited a 15 minute walk from the city centre, which is an obvious must for all cricketers.

“A beautifully converted, fully equiped and comfortable 2 bedroomed cottage” My wife and I take 3 trips a year to England, visiting towns and small cities we never had a chance to see while we lived there and this accommodation in the top 2 we have visited in the past 7 years. It has been beautifully restored with a lot of attention to detail and obviously a lot of thought has been given to equipping it. The owners clearly take pride in providing guests with all the comforts of home. The beds were comfortable and spotlessly clean and we really appreciated the quality cotton bedding and towels. Both bedrooms were ensuite and the shower was spacious and efficient (a combie boiler provided instant and limitless hot water) considering the small size of one of the bathrooms. The other bathroom had a large stand alone bath. Little details like toothbrush and soap holders and liquid soap dispensers were among the many features that made it feel like a home. The kitchen was equipped with a variety of spotlessly clean pots, pans, cutlery/utensils, and crockery with plastic cups and plates for young children. The cooker was spotless, inside and out, a welcome change from a lot of places we've stayed at and the washer drier worked efficiently. It also had a small breakfast bar. The living/dining room was spacious with a large table and chairs sitting 4 people comfortably. The owners had left a large selection of books, a few DVDs, a small box of children's toys and books. There was an Ipod attachment on the radio and a TV/DVD player. There was a small enclosed patio (not generally overlooked by neighbours) just outside the kitchen with a table and 4 chairs plus a mini summer house with cane furniture. Although the weather was not the best, we were never cold in any part of the house. We were able to walk to the centre of Canterbury in 5 minutes and to the Cathedral in 10 minutes. The route to the Cathedral passed at least a dozen restaurants and bars. Canterbury is a beautiful place to which we shall certainly return and Blackfriars Cottage will be our first choice of accommodation.

“A cosy cottage in the heart of Canterbury” I spent a fantastic and unforgettable holiday in Canterbury thanks to the cottage I rented there. It was so comfortable and so well furnished that I felt to be at home. Great the location: two minutes walk from the cathedral( I could see the it from the house), and the streets full of pittoresque shops, restaurants and old pubs. I wish I were there now!

“Perfect English Cottage with Location, Location, Location” We stayed at Blackfriar's cottage for 9 days in April and it was the ideal accomodation for our vacation. Mario was there to great us when we arrived and gave us a quick orientation. Fresh flowers on the table was the perfect touch. The cottage was spotless and looked like it had been recently upgraded. The two bedrooms each had ensuite bathrooms. One bedroom had twin beds and the other a double/queen. Even though I took the bedroom facing the street, which seemed to get alot of foot traffic, it was very quiet at nite. The cottage came with wifi, dishwasher, laundry etc. and a charming outdoor space, that we didn't get to use as the weather didn't cooperate. The cottage is located a block away from a 12th century church, (St. Alphege's) and a short walk to downtown, with all the shops, restaurants, and museums. As we hadn't rented a car while staying in Canterbury this was essential for us to be close to all the attractions. Brochures of things to see and local events were also provided in the cottage. Mario and Clare were very helpful and efficient to deal with and if we ever find ourselves visiting Canterbury in the future I wouldn't hesitate to rent Blackfriars again.

“Super house in great location” A really lovely house with everything you could ever need. The children loved the board games, we loved the swanky bathrooms and the location. Only a few minutes walk to the cathedral. Wouldn't change anything, but note that the parking is not cheap if you plan on leaving your car in the car park for the weekend as we did. Still, if you factor that into the cost then it's fine. The house is worth it.

“Perfect writer's retreat!” Beautifully decorated, perfect location, and secluded enough to provide privacy in the center of the city. Everything was exactly as described. Couldn't have been better!
