Home description

The restored country-house includes: a large eat-in kitchen, dining/living room plus three bedrooms, one bathroom, front garden that's fenced in and absolutely safe for children and great for afternoon sunbathing. Also, large playroom/extra bedroom, bathroom with shower, small sitting room plus rear garden opening onto surrounding fields.

The house itself has been restored, is clean, spacious, quiet and cool because of its thick stone walls and hillside location that captures the thermal breeze. The beauty of the place is also its surroundings - open fields, woods, hilltops with tiny burghs and villages, and the Enza River - a stream really that is great for playing in throughout the summer months as it's never deep or too cold. A great place for hiking, cycling, running with varied terrain, slopes and scenery, it's also perfect for creative retreats and should it ever be too quiet, the historical sites of Canossa, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena and - why not - Maranello and Ferrari Factory & Museum are a short ride away.

In brief, the entire area looks much like Ireland or the English countryside with lots better food! - parmesan cheese, Lambrusco wine, prosciutto, and more.

The Emilia Romagna region

The region is famous for its donne e motori. From its trend-setting beach towns of Rimini and Riccione to the farmlands and the Apennines, the locals really do enjoy and share a joie de vivre and openness that is quite unique. It is, after all, home to the great filmaker Federico Fellini, Ferrari cars and Ducati motorcycles, parmiggiano or Parmesan cheese, prosciutto and bologna ham, sparkling Lambrusco wine, gnocco fritto and much more.

Historically, Emilia-Romagna was Etruscan, then Roman. Emilia refers to via Æmilia connecting Rome to northern Italy. Romagna is a corruption of Romània; when Ravenna was the capital of the Italian portion of the Byzantine Empire, the Lombards extended the official name of the Empire to the lands around Ravenna. The coastal area of Emilia, ruled by the Byzantines between 540-751, became known as the separate region of Romagna. In the Middle Ages, the history of both Emilia and Romagna was the history of its individual cities. In the 16th century, most of these were included into the Papal States, but the territory of Parma and Piacenza and Modena remained independent until Emilia-Romagna was included into the Italian kingdom in 1859-1861.

Cities of Interest: Bologna, Ferrara, Parma, Modena, Reggio Emilia.

The playroom may also be used as a bedroom for a family of four or as the fourth bedroom. Kitchen is well-equipped and large enough for dinners of six to eight people. For more formal dinners there is an adjacent dining/living room.

Further details outdoors:
The front garden is fenced in and has a lawn so that it's safe for children and comfortable for the entire family, while the back garden opens onto the surrounding fields and is perfect for an afternoon nap as it's in the shade. The house itself has no A/C but is always quite cool, esp evenings, so that a good night sleep is virtually guaranteed.
The house is semi-detached, but the neighbours - cousins from nearby Parma - are never there. A very kind and helpful farmer lives up the road with some fresh produce.
