Cannes, with its beautiful setting, mild climate and splendid festivals, has long been a popular spot for tourists. 150 years ago Cannes was nothing more than an insignificant fishing village.
In the 19th century the Lord Chancellor of England, Lord Brougham established himself in Cannes, because of the mild climates. He was detained there on his way to Italy. Chancellor Brougham liked the place so much that he built himself an elaborate villa on the hill outside Cannes.
Forty-five years later, such was his influence on his friends and others, that Cannes had acquired many spacious villas, almost fifty hotels and a thriving market in house-and-estate-building. This was the first boom time for Cannes with elaborate homes being constructed to entertain. On the centenary of his birth the citizens of Cannes unveiled a statue of him and celebrated with a week of festivities including flower shows and regattas.
Today, Cannes is one of the best-known cities of the French Riviera both for its climate, festivals & lifestyle.
Cannes / Central Cannes area
The Palais des Festivals, the location of the Film Festival, has been described by Liza Minnelli as an Egyptian tomb and called "the bunker" by the locals. Be sure to check out its concrete base. Handprints and autographs of celebrities abound!
Cannes has miles of beautiful sandy beaches. Although Cannes has lots of beaches, many of them are private, if not the vast majority. Almost all of these private beaches belong to luxury hotels in the area. The beach, Plage de la Croisette, is a notable example of a lovely beach which extends between the Vieux Port and the Port Canto. Although the beach is not strictly private, you can enjoy it alongside guests from the hotels, but you must pay an entrance fee of about £20 which covers your deck chair and sun umbrella hire.
If you prefer a quieter beach, try some of the nearby islands. Ferry excursions to the islands leave from Cannes. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Saint-Honorat and 30 minutes to get Sainte-Marguerite. Definitely worth a visit.
Other places of interest in walking distance of Villa Moxart are La Croisette and La Pointe-Croisette, Le Centre-ville (town center) and Le Vieux Port & Le Suquet (the old port & the hill). Cannes is very famous for its international events, Who hasn’t heard of the film festival in Cannnes. The film festival in Cannes is the most important event in the city, but Cannes has many other important events too. These include Cannes Lions where the International Advertising Film Festival awards media professionals for their creations & MIPTV (Cannes film market) - The World’s leader market for TV & audiovisual professionals bring them together to enable them to form new contacts.
How to get there
Flight: Nearest airport - Niece
Train: Cannes is served by the international trains, Trains Bleus (the Paris–Nice–Ventimiglia Express), TEE (the Trans-Europe Express) and TGV (high-speed trains).
The station is just a 5 minute walk from Cannes city centre, with the rue d’ Antibes leading onto La Croisette. A Rapide-Côte d’Azur bus stop is located at the station. Taxis are also available at the station.
