The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
One of the most famous resort areas in the world, the French Riviera continues west from the Italian Riviera and Menton through Monaco, Nice, Antibes and Cannes, along the Mediterranean coast of the Alpes-Maritimes département. The climate is beneficent. Temperate winters are what started the Riviera craze in the 1830's; dry, hot summers; spring and fall usually perfect travelling weather. Enough rain to keep all that greenery in bloom, usually in November and February, but it rarely lasts long.
The area offers many prestigious events: Monaco: Circus Festival, January 27 to February 3 Nice: Carnival, February 10-27 Menton: Lemon Festival, February 12-27 Tourrettes-sur-Loup: Violet Festival, March 13 Monaco: Grand Prix Formula I Race, May 12-15 Grasse: Rose Festival, May 12-16 Cannes: International Film Festival, May 12-23 Nice: Jazz Festival, July 8-19 Juan-les-Pins: Jazz Festival, End of July Grasse: Jasmine Festival, August 4-7

Ski Resorts: The ski resort of Isola 2000 is situated in the Mercantour area of the Alpes Maritimes department in the Southern Alps region. It is part of the Mercantour ski domain. The lift served area extends from 2000 metres to 2603 metres. There are 120 km of lift served runs. The resort features a snowpark. Isola has a good snow record and is normally open from December until the end of April. This offers the possibility of a dip in the Med before skiing in the afternoon. The ski resort of Valberg is situated in the Alpes Maritimes department in the Southern Alps region. It is part of the Valberg-Beuil ski domain and offers a total of 90kms of pisted skiing. The lift served area extends from 1430 metres to 2100 metres however it is not possible to ski this amount of vertical in a single run. Most of the pistes give you around 300 to 400 meters of descent Many of the pistes run down through wide, shady, gorges. This helps preserve the snow later into the season.
Cannes / Le Cannet area
Cannes is quite a small town, but it is a town of many faces. Indeed, the centre itself presents three very different landscapes – the prestigious seaside promenade, La Croisette, the lively town centre overflowing with boutiques, and the picturesque old port and Suquet hill which make up the old town. In the same style as Le Suquet, but 4km or so north of the town, Le Cannet is a delightful little village of narrow, winding streets and old houses belonging to the town’s suburbs. Also bordering the town but this time to the east, La Californie-Super Cannes is a lush, green haven sheltering luxury villas. On the western side, the suburbs engulf Cannes La Bocca and heading south, you’ll reach two green gems afloat in the sea – just 1km from Cannes’ shores, Iles Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honourat attract thousands of visitors every year.
Cannes is the most beautiful and one of the most popular resorts of the Riviera. Its wonderful Mediterranean climate provides the ideal setting for a great vacation holiday all the year round. The climate in Cannes is typically Mediterranean and the city enjoys a good 12 hours of sunshine per day during the summer season (May to September), while in winter (December to February), the weather is very mild. Both seasons see a relatively low level of rainfall and the most significant period of rain is during October and November, when an average of 110 millimetres is the norm.
There are miles of beaches along the Golfe de la Napoule or along "La Croisette" in the Rade de Cannes. The beaches are all sandy here, as in Antibes and Juan-les-Pins. At the east end of "La Croisette", just before the new Port Canto yacht harbour, is another park and playground. This one also has carnival-type rides for the bigger kids. Beside the playground at the east end of "La Croisette" is the Jardin Alexandre III, a lovely big flower-garden park.
Take a boat tour on the sea with Compagnie Maritime Cannoise and get the chance to visit the famous Lerins Islands plus a variety of other destinations worthy of note such as Monaco and St Tropez. A submarine trip is also available to give visitors the chance to see some of the local sea life. Parc Zoologique de Frejus is a popular attraction which was originally presented as a traditional zoo facility, but has now been redeveloped as a safari park in which visitors can drive around. Galimard is a working perfumery offering visitors tours on which they can get an in-depth insight into the country’s multimillion-dollar industry.
If you visit Cannes at the right time of the year, you can take advantage of the city’s varied selection of cultural events, with the International Film Festival perhaps being the most famous. When the calendar has a blank spot, visitors will find plenty of static attractions to keep them occupied, with historical and natural sights topping the bill. The beach is of course the most popular attraction for many and Cannes’ golden sands are a great place to spend lazy summer days, while the blue ocean waters offer plenty of opportunities to get active.
For visitors with cultural inclinations, Cannes has an impressive selection of museums and art galleries covering a wide variety of themes and historical periods.
Cannes has night venues of every description and the city is a veritable hotbed of activity after the sun’s gone down. Casinos are a highly popular aspect of the city’s evening entertainment scene and are full seven days a week with addicts, hopefuls and those doing a little controlled dabbling in the gambling scene. The most famous casinos in the city include Casino Croisette at the Palais des Festivals; Palm Beach Casino at Pointe de la Croisette; and Casino des Princes on boulevard de la Croisette. If a more traditional night out is your thing then you’ll find plenty of good bars across the city with boulevard de la Croisette being a good place to head if you want to be guaranteed of finding a busy venue. Nightclubs appealing to all tastes can be found in the city centre and the gay season is especially happening and popular. Most bars stay open until early morning, while nightclubs can still be busy well into dawn
Cannes is a shopper's paradise for chic and expensive items. Although you might want to buy your yacht in Antibes, the Rolls-Royce dealer is in Cannes, and there's an endless collection of top-of-the-line jewellery shops, haute-couture clothing shops and art galleries. Along this famous Boulevard de la Croisette and its many side streets are the art galleries, jewellery stores and the most exclusive clothing shops such as Chanel, Cartier, Valentino, Christian Dior and others
With its coastal location, cuisine in Cannes is naturally based quite significantly around seafood and delectable dishes. Meal prices vary massively depending on where you go, but mid-price establishments are comparable to UK restaurants; the sky’s the limit however and you can easily pay a hundred euros for a gourmet meal here.
There are a number of annual summer festivals that are unique to the city. Cannes Film Festival is the highlight of the city’s event calendar and is a two-week long event that sees the city descended upon by major Hollywood actors and directors as well as a large number of independent film makers. Movies are screened throughout the period (May).
