The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The French Riviera (or Cote d'Azur) stretches west from the Italian Riviera and Menton through Monaco, Nice, Antibes and Cannes, along the Mediterranean coast of the Alpes-Maritimes region.
The Riviera became a fashionable resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was particularly popular with the British upper class. Initially it was a winter resort, valued for its mild winter climate. Today the region still benefits from a Mediterranean-type climate, with exceptional sunshine and mild temperatures almost year-round.
Cannes / Central Cannes area
Cannes is the "star" of the French Riviera, famous for the yearly Film Festival in May and the glitzy hotels, cars, beaches and visitors attracted here. Exotic people and plenty of poodles (it is France, after all!), Cannes has something to offer all year-round.
