The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Cannes is well-known in Italy for its Film Festival, but it has been in the top ten of world tourist centres since the beginning of tourism. Cannes still enjoys a small, but flourishing old centre with narrow streets full of boutiques, tiny shops of all kinds, numerous restaurants and the daily market. In spite of the influx of foreign tourists Cannes is still essentially French, though the Italian influence is still to be felt, especially in their attitude towards foreigners ! Many of them speak a fair amount of English which though it may not improve your holiday, may well make life a good deal easier !
To visit: The museum on the top of the old part of Cannes in an old castle previously used by the monks of Lérins, offers numerous objets d'art in an attractive setting and the Chapel of St Anne (XII centruy) holds an amazing collection of musical instruments. Three rooms there are consacrated to local, provençale paintings from XIX century and they open onto the courtyard of the museum and the Square Tower (XII century & 116 steps) where there is a truly "admirable panorama". To mention just a little of Cannes . . .
An important thing to know is that one can get to Cannes reasonably easily by train and the Cannes station is not more than 300 metres from the aparment. If you wish, the agency will meet you at the flat with the key. The car tends to be a bit of a handicap because though there is a very convenient parking place under the apartment, it tends to very busy and it is also pretty pricey. We tend to go by car ourselves but it ends up sitting in the garage making money for the owner of the parking place . . .
Another trick is to go by car, unload, sleep and then look for a non-paying place the next morning when you are fresh and can stand the fiddling around. Flying into Nice and taking a bus to Cannes is also on the cards and has the advantage of leaving directly from the airport, rather than taking a bus to the station and the train to Cannes.
