Description: Canareggio is the most northern district in Venice. There are a number of legends explaining its name, one which refers to the many reed beds or canneto that formerly lined the area. It is the second largest neighborhood after Castello. The homonymous canal was formerly the main entrance to Venice before it was connected by overland railway. Along with the Grand Canal it is currently the only inland canal where the ferries or Vaporetti can pass.
One of the quietest and most modest districts in the city, it has conserved a great deal of its beauty, and is divided by a network of wide canals, and full of little narrow streets, small shops, simple bars and handicraft workshops.
There are numerous buildings of tourist and cultural interest including the gothic XIV century Church Madonna dellOrto that contains many of the works of Tintoretto; who as a parishioner was buried there.
Also worthy of a visit are the former charity building (the old school of mercy) Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia in the dellAbazia area, and the Santa Maria dei Miracoli church that was one of the first Renaissance style buildings in Venice.
The Campo dei Mori area; the name also assigned to the statues erected there, is derived from its past as the home of the tradesmen from Morea in the Greek Peloponese Islands. The home of the famous Tintoretto is also close by. It is believed he lived in the house from 1574 until his death; identified easily with a clearly marked bust statue and memorial plaque.
A little off the beaten and more conventional track within the Canareggio district is the neighborhood of the Ghetto: the oldest Jewish quarter in the world. The very first settlements date back to the V century.
In Venice the Jewish community flourished and expanded and various synagogues and schools were built. It is also the area of the city with the tallest buildings. The Jews were not permitted to build and expand within the city and therefore were forced to construct vertically over the buildings already in place. This area is also home to the Jewish Museum of Venice.
