The Andalucia region

The capital of the region of Axarquia, Velez-Malaga, is a twenty-minute drive away and boasts a fascinating history as well as remarkable architecture and cuisine. On the outskirts of Velez, you will find several large supermarkets as well as the El Ingenio shopping mall. Just opposite this is Aquavelez Aqua park, a great day out for the family. Nearby activities include hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, bird watching, rappelling, all of which can be done in the Sierra Tejada National park, situated directly behind the villa. Baviera Golf resort offers a great days play. Fishing and sailing is available on the gorgeous Lake Vinuela. The costal resort of Torre del Mar is a mere twenty minutes away with wonderful chiringuitos (beach bars and restaurant), which specialize in seasonal seafood. However, for more upmarket dining, as well as stunning beaches, the famous town of Nerja is just up the coast. And while you’re there you must visit with and its celebrated caves. The newly renovate port and city of Malaga is less than an hour away. A true melting pot of history and architecture, it includes some of the best shopping in the area and if you are feeling cultural, some exquisite collections in it’s many museums – including one dedicated to Malaga’s most famous son: Pablo Picasso. Be sure to stop into El Pimpi for a truly “Malagueño” dining experience (see if you can spot Antonio Banderas’ autograph on one of the wine barrels!) before taking a tour around the Roman ruins and up to the breathtaking views from the Alhama Moorish fort. If Moorish architecture is your thing, then a visit to the jewel in the Moorish architecture’s Western crown, the Alhambra Palace of Granada (a mere one and a half hours drive), is an unmissable day drip. And if you are seeking some winter sun, you could be sunning yourself on the beach one day, and up to the mountain range of the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, (which boasts the longest ski season in Europe),

Canillas De Aceituno

The delightful Mudejar village of Canillas de Aceituno includes three specialist restaurants, an abundance of bars, several greengrocers and convenience stores, two butchers, a fishmonger, a chemist and three banks.

"Peace and quiet, sun and relaxation in a stunning setting!"

We spent a super two weeks in this wonderful villa. It is a great place for a large family, group or as in our case, an extended family ( we were six adults and three children). The main house is very tastefully decorated with all modern conveniences while still retaining an old Spanish farm feel. The annex while slightly less modern was also charming and worked perfectly as a quiet retreat. We can't say enough about the beautiful terrace with the huge round table (easily enough space for twelve)! This is were we ate all our meals in the shade of the algarrobo tree while enjoying the gentle breezes. While not large, the pool was more than adequate for the children, ages 9, 12 and 14, to have hours of fun playing and splashing around and for the grownups to cool off in (when we weren't lounging on the terrace or napping in the hamocks). We did take a trip to the beach at Torre del Mar but quickly returned to the peace and quiet of our 'mountain hideaway'.

The quaint little village of Canillas de Aceituno is surprisingly free of tourists. There are several small food shops, a butcher and bakery as well as three or four good restaurants. We particularly enjoyed eating at La Sociedad.

A big thanks to James and Rob, the owners, for all their help and attention. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and are already making plans to return next year.
