The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region

With so much sunshine and such varied terrain, Languedoc is a mecca for those looking to get out there and DO something. The list of activities and things to do in Languedoc Roussillon, south France, is absolutely endless. You'll find water practically everywhere in Languedoc Roussillon, so there's no shortage of canal boating, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, fishing and swimming . Three mountain ranges make skiing, rock climbing and walking great options too. Golf and tennis are also well-catered for, with golf courses and tennis centres dotted across the region. For the slightly more adventurous, there's ballooning (there's nothing like floating over the rivers and vineyards of Languedoc on a summer's day), paragliding and flying (guided flights over the Cathar castles are highly recommended). For equestrians, there's France's most famous horse trail (Le Sentier Cathar), and for ornithologists, the variety of birds in Languedoc, especially in the mountainous and swamp regions, with everything from vultures to pelicans.
Flights to Languedoc are multiplying, thanks to the low-cost airline boom, which has brought down prices and opened up small airports . As a result flights to Languedoc are now surprisingly cheap. Excellent motorways mean that the many airports near Languedoc are also a great option if you're visiting the region. You can even fly into Girona in Spain and stock up on spirits at the border! . The Canaules-et-Argentieres area
Shopping : There is one small shop / bakery in Canaules where you can get your fresh baguettes , croissants etc. each morning . To find it just walk down the village past the town hall & the Post Office & take the only left turn that you see . To walk from La Bastide to the shop/bakery takes about 3 minutes . You will also find a well stocked supermarket in nearby Lezan ( 5 mins away aprox. by car ) as well as 2 large supermarkets ( Lidl & Intermarché ) a little further on in Saint Christol .
Attractions: The main attraction in Canaules is of course La Bastide des Lavandierés . With it's large 12m x 6m pool , kids play area & French & UK TV channels in each apartment you should be able to keep yourself & your family happily occupied every day . While you are there you should also think about visiting our vineyard in nearby Saint-jean-De-Serres (2 km away) where you can see a working vineyard up close for yourself . Take the opportunity to do some wine tasting & depending on the time of year you may even get the chance to do a little work on the vines . You can also buy wine here to use during your holiday or to take home .
For more info please visit our vineyard website: www.LVI-Noblevine.com
Food & Drink : You are literally surrounded by small villages & towns which have an abundance of places for eating & drinking . There's one small bar / restaurant in Saint-Jean-De-Serres which is just 2 kilometres away. It is very child friendly & Christian & Brigitte will make you very welcome when you tell them you are staying at the bastide . You can also get really good take-away pizza here. A little further on in Ledignan (5km's) there are a couple of places to eat & drink as well as another pizza take-away . For a selection of Bars & Restaurant's there is of course nearby Lezan which is just 4 kilometres away . Sauve (11 km's away) has some very good restaurants hidden among it's narrow streets as has it's next door neighbour - Quissac (10.4 km's from Canaules) where you will also find a nice fast food / take-away. So all in all - No shortage of choice as far as eating & drinking goes . For a real French experience you can take a short trip into the Cevennes mountains to the village of Monoblet where chef Eric in our favourite restaurant will look after you . For family dining there is a large selection of restaurants all along the main street in nearby Anduze most of which have good tourist menu's . Children are well looked after in almost all restaurants in this area of France .
Even though we havn’t actually moved any closer to the coast we now have a lovely sandy beach just a 15 minute drive away from us in Alés where in Summer 2010 a very nice man-made river beach was created . The beach which is officially open from early June until the end of August is on the bank of the Gardon River & it has some excellent facilities including easy parking , shallow water swimming for kids , showers , a lifeguard , beach volleyball , boules , pedal boating , kayaking , water bubbles , a café bar & a Restaurant . You can also rent sun loungers, umbrella’s , kayaks , pedal boats etc … At night time during summer there is normally a DJ or other free musical entertainment throughout the entire week. Although it is not a substitute for the stunning beaches of the Med it is still a nice place to spend a sunny Summer's day. And it's just a short drive from your apartment.

A wonderful accommodation in unspoiled countryside, close to the major attractions of Nice, Montpellier, Cevennes mountains etc. Booking was really straightforward and communication with owner excellent. One there, housekeepers Wendy and Andre offer a friendly and comprehensive service. Ideal for very young families, but an excellent base for older groups wanting to explore the local sites. |

Comfortable, clean, well furnished, lovely building and pool. No bar or restaurant in the village but has a boulangere. |

The first thing you must do is to 'shake yourself down' and realise that Canaules really exists; that LA BASTIDE delivers on every level. It is a place which has that rare ability to give you that wrap-around feeling; It gets even better, this was before those caring and thoughtful proprietors decided to employ André and Wendy to cater for your every need - this is the Entente Cordiale taken to a new level - Go on, try it and spoil yourself! "What a fabulous week we had . The best apartment we’ve ever stayed in ! Spacious , comfy , very clean & lovely décor . A beautiful building with a fabulous entry door . Super Laundry Room . Lovely pool . Lovely seating area next to swings ( great for young children ) . Apartment the best we have ever stayed in in terms of cleanliness , comfort , décor & especially in the items provided in the kitchen . Having a bathroom per bedroom was fabulous & the showers were great . Television with satellite channels went down very well with the children (sadly !)" - Gary & Fiona Shewan from Rochdale - Guests at La Bastide des Lavandiéres - August 2009
"What a wonderful 2 weeks we had staying at La Bastide des Lavandieres on our first trip to the south of France . The location is idyllic . The village of Canaules is in the middle of the countryside surrounded by vineyards & fields of sunflowers . The apartment was within a beautifully restored stone building and was very well equipped with everything one could ask for . While the pool is a good size and child friendly . The courtyard is a great place to meet with other guests & share a bottle of the locally produced wine . Our stay was made even more pleasant with communication from Sean from the outset of our booking and especially the week before we arrived . Much appreciated and many thanks . It was also great to meet with Noel while at the apartments & hearing all about the local region ." - The Barbour Family from Troon , South Ayrshire , Scotland
