About this location
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc region covers roughly the region between the Rhône and the Aude River, extending northwards to the Cévennes and the Massif Central. Languedoc derives from Occitan (French: langue d'oc), the language spoken in the region before French became the general usage language. Languedoc has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans, and invaded by the Alamanni, Vandals, Visigoths, and Saracens. Some parts of Languedoc have been part of the dominions of the kings of Aragon and the kings of Majorca; it did not come under French control until the 16th century.
Nowadays the Languedoc is most famous for it's wonderful wines . It can probably best be described as an undiscovered gem, especially in the winter. If you are looking for warmer winter days with plenty of sunshine come over an enjoy the beauty and tranquility that the Languedoc has to offer. During Summer the entire region comes alive & the wonderful coastal resorts are lively and full of tourists enjoying themselves . At La Bastide des Lavandières you can have the best of everything . You are literally surrounded by vines & vineyards but in less than an hour you can be in a number of major cities or at the beaches of the Med.
Canaules is a typical French village - small but full of character . It is just a 15 minute drive to the small city of Alés . It is close to a number of larger villages & small towns as well as numerous vineyards - many of which welcome visitors . Guests are very welcome to come & visit our friends the Plagne family at the nearby Domaine de la Vallière and also the Chardonnaud family at Domaine les Vieux Foudres . Both vineyards are delighted to welcome our guests for tastings , tours etc .
Nimes , Montpellier & Marseilles are just 3 of the larger cities which are easily reached as well as the beaches on the coast or the skiing in the Cevennes. Please visit our website for detailed information about the many attractions & places worth visiting in the Languedoc region . Just search for 'Canaules' and you will find us at the top of the list
Our caretakers Jenny & Gerry are fluent in English , French & German
