The Mallorca/Majorca region

The sun-kissed Mediterranean island of Mallorca lies 500 miles off the east coast of Spain in the tranquil Mediterranean Sea. Largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is blessed with almost 250 miles of diverse coastline, a host of picturesque towns and villages and the dramatic mountain scenery of the Serra de Tramuntana. This mountain range, running down the west of Majorca, has been made a World Heritage Site in recognition of the extraordinary techniques used to develop agriculture on its steep slopes over the centuries.

As a well-established holiday hotspot the island offers an unrivalled selection of activities and amenities making Mallorca holidays effortless and enjoyable from start to finish.

Mallorca's Mediterranean climate makes it a beautiful place to visit all year round. The summer period, from June to September, is the busiest time on the island with beaches and resorts at their sun-soaked finest.

Spring and autumn on Mallorca are both quieter times to visit. Hiking and cycling are two great ways to see the island at these times whilst avoiding the high summer temperatures. A day's cycling or hiking may well also involve visiting a winery, an olive mill or a farm to learn how sobrasada, the Majorcan pork sausage, is made.

The winter period from December to March is quieter still. Between January & February it provides the opportunity to marvel at Mallorca's five million almond trees in full bloom. The island takes on a spectacular beauty. The flowering almond trees, with their different pink and white shades, are particularly attractive to photographers, painters and to all lovers of nature in general.

Can Picafort

A little about C'an Picafort...

Located in the Northeast of the island of Mallorca, in the very centre of the Bay of Alcudia, the biggest bay of the Balearics, with 17 kilometres of beach.

The distance to Palma is 60 km, half of which, approximately, is a motorway, crossing the whole island right through its middle.

Can Picafort offers all the traditional Mallorca resort facilities, including superb sandy beaches, go-karting, lots of shops and bars and watersports. You get a little extra though. Easy access to the S'Albufera Wetlands nature park, various historical sites to visit nearby including the Son Real Necropolis, and Can Picafort has an annual fiesta/festival which sits right up there with the best of Mallorca festivals.

There are two beaches in total, and perhaps the best beach of the two is in the Baulo district, with it's adjacent nature reserve as well. There's quite a few bars and restaurants and a nice pedestrian only promenade, all with a laid back feel.

Can Picafort benefits are much to do with it's location in the Bay of Alcudia. If you've hired a car then it's a perfect Majorca North base for branching out into the S'Albufera wetlands, great for birdwatchers. Why not bob upto culturally rich Pollenca, and take in some of the stunning Formentor landscape. Can Picafort nearby attractions include the iron age pre-historic Iron Age/Roman burial ground of Son Real Necropolis, known also as the Cemetery of the Phoenicians. It's only a short 20 minute walk from the Son Baulo beach. Check out also medieval farmsteads at Son Real and la Alquiería, as well as the nearby Rectory and Parish Church in Santa Margalida dating from the 16th century.

This is thus a space remained unspoilt; a beautiful uncrowded spot within easy access. Immersed in the natural reserve the beach of S'Arenal den Casat is also worth a visit; unspoilt long beach (1km/25m), formed by a dune system fixed by endemic vegetation leaning on a pine wood is a good example of what the Majorcan coastline was like before the urban boom.

"A fantastic welcome and introduction to Majorca"

We spent a week in this very clean and functional apartment which is well situated to offer a peaceful and relaxing break, but within easy reach of beach, shops, restaurants and bars. We found everybody within the local area to be extremely warm and friendly. Travel around the island can be managed with ease and it was very green and pretty during our late spring stay. Our host Kelly could not have been more friendly, welcoming and helpful,' particularly when we sought her support with an unexpected health situation, when her situation management skills and translation skills were invaluable and very much appreciated.

I'm very pleased and grateful for your kind words. It was a great pleasure.
