The New England / New Hampshire region
Every day is a good day for viewing wildlife in New Hampshire. From the Connecticut Lakes in the far north to the seacoast in the south and everywhere in between, the landscape exhibits a diversity few other places can match. More than 450 species of fish, mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as countless insects and marine animals are part of New Hampshire’s wildlife heritage. While the entire state offers wildlife viewing opportunities, the region of the state known as the Great North Woods exhibits an exceptionally large variety of wildlife.
To reach this area, travel north through New Hampshire on Route 16 to the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountain National Forest. This scenic byway offers dozens of opportunities to stop and take short walks—one of the best ways to experience and learn about wildlife. Keep an eye out for moose, especially in the vicinity of Oliverian Brook. In the late spring and early summer, you’ll find a wide array of neotropical migrant birds that nest in the forest. Continue north through Franconia Notch State Park and keep your eyes peeled for peregrine falcons. In late May and June, be sure to check out the slopes of Cannon Mountain Ski Area to see if you can spot black bear. Grab your hiking boots and explore the Presidential Range, offering a variety of AMC programs and great rock climbing off Cathedral Ledge.
