About this location
The Puglia region
Apulia (Italian: Puglia) is a region of Italy in Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southernmost portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy.
The region comprises 19,345 square kilometers (7,469 sq mi), and its population is about 4.1 million. It is bordered by the other Italian regions of Molise to the north, Campania to the west, and Basilicata to the southwest. It neighbors Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro, across the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, respectively. The region extends as far north as Monte Gargano. Its capital city is Bari.
The role that the cuisine plays in Puglia and Southern Italy's culture is proven by the fact that the Mediterranean cuisine received an Unesco heritage award. Having warm and sunny weather most of the year and being surrounded by the sea, Puglia has traditionally been a region with excellent production in terms of wines, extra virgin olive oil, fruit, vegetables, wheat, and seafood.
Campomarino di Maruggio
Salento (Salentu in the local dialect) is the southeastern part of Puglia, in southern Italy. It is a subpeninsula of the main Italian Peninsula, sometimes described as the "heel" of the Italian "boot". It encompasses the entire administrative area of the province of Lecce, a large part of the province of Brindisi and part of that of Taranto. The peninsula is also known as Terra d'Otranto, and in ancient times was called variously Messapia, Calabria, and Salentina.
Maruggio is a village and comune in the Taranto province in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. The village is located in a natural depression 2 km far from the Gulf of Taranto, in the north-west part of Salento peninsula. In the village there are 5,539 inhabitants. The nearest village are Torricella (6 km), Sava (10 km), Manduria (12 km) and Avetrana (16 km).
