An elegant home with room for 3-5 in a spectacular setting

Enjoy the wonderful art, culture and nature of Umbria from this beautiful home within the ancient stone walls of the castle of Campello Alto. The tower property opens onto the magnificent old walls and a contemporary garden with lots of outdoor space for dining, sunning and experiencing a privileged stay in this unique location. Throughout the house you will find furnishings featuring the best of contemporary Italian design. The ground floor opens up from the sunny terrace to a modern kitchen, dining room and a living room with fireplace. Up the stairs are a double bedroom with sofa bed and private entrance to the back sculpture garden and a centre room with single sofa bed and half bath. At the top of the tower is the master bedroom with queen-sized bed and en-suite bath with shower. Only three other families still live within this jewel amongst Umbrian castles so you can feel as if the castle were your realm, dominating the olive-clad hills of this world-famous village. The foot of the hill brings you to the park of the Fonti del Clitunno, the placid waters of which have been written about by poets through the ages from Virgil to Byron and up to the present and from there the waters lead to the Unesco heritage site of the Tempietto--a stunning treasure of the Longobards. The village of Campello lies between the castle and the park and offers all services, shops and easy access to the main highway north and south to all the sights of Umbria and beyond. Our guests have access to our private pool just a 5-minute (2.5 km) drive uphill in a beautiful wooded location. We also provide one complimentary admission for two at a nearby spa with heated pool, sauna, steam room, etc. and can provide more passes for additional days or guests at reasonable rates. Come enjoy life at the castle and, if you have time for an extended stay in the region, consider an additional week at our apartment in the centre of Assisi or ask about our holiday homes on Monte Conero on the Adriatic coast and on the Sardinian coast if you'd like to add a beach holiday to your Italian tour.

The Umbria region

Umbria is known as the 'green heart of Italy' for its stream-crossed agricultural plains, its forest-clad mountains and its hills of silvery-green olives. Less-well known than its neighbor, Tuscany, to the north, it appeals to experienced and novice travelers alike. Famous sites such as Assisi attract thousands each year yet still offer quiet byways. Spoleto, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello, Todi, Orvieto, Perugia: each town has a unique character and many beautiful monuments, museums and cultural events such as The Festival of Two Worlds for opera, music and dance, Umbria Jazz and numerous local fairs and festivities. Sagrantino di Montefalco is only one of the numerous excellent local wines and the hams and sausages of Norcia are famous throughout Italy. The local cuisine is simple yet delicious as it features the best locally grown produce and specialties. Rock climbing and rafting are available in the Valnerina for adventurous sport lovers and hiking and horseback riding are available on many local trails. A warm Mediterranean summer climate and a brisk winter are flanked by cool clear autumn days and gorgeous verdant spring days of spectacular wildflower displays.

Campello sul Clitunno

Just minutes from both Spoleto and Montefalco, Campello is a quiet town with a charming central square and park, cafes and shops including fresh pasta and truffle stores. Below the town are the Fonti del Clitunno--a charming water park whose praises have been lauded by poets throughout the centuries. Now recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site is the Tempietto, a precious relic of the Longobard realm sited on the waters running from the Clitunno. Campello Alto is a monumental castle whose imposing structure escaped the wrath of the medieval rulers of Spoleto who destroyed the castles of most of the surrounding towns so that its romantically illuminated walls are a beacon in the evening landscape above the Spoleto Valley.
