Villa Campanet Vell - 425
Finca | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Taking the Moscari road out of Campanet, the road narrows briefly as it circumnavigates a bend after a little over 1 km and almost hidden in the wall, the double gates of Villa Campanet Vell open into a driveway that sweeps around to the courtyard entrance and inspiring views of the Tramuntana Mountains. This courtyard, an enchanting introduction to the centuries old Finca is bordered on three sides by covered outbuildings and the Finca itself. A tall, neatly clipped hedge almost completes the fourth side, making for total privacy and this erstwhile working farm yard has been transformed into a pretty garden of rooms, planted with flowering shrubs and trees, with a beautifully tiled roman step entry pool (depth 0.9m - 2.10m), surrounded by paved terraces.
The open plan living room of the Finca itself opens directly from the courtyard, where a sofa and chairs are arranged around a fireplace and brightly whitewashed walls are hung with a host of artefacts from days gone by. A dining table and chairs are close to the doorway to the farmhouse kitchen, well equipped with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and micro-wave with, at the far end, a second door returning to the courtyard and a covered terrace, furnished for outside dining and with a purpose built barbecue close by. Just across the courtyard garden is a barn now used for drying washing out of the sun and there is a washing machine in a separate building.
A tiled hallway leads from the living area to a twin bedroom on the ground floor, with window to the rear courtyard, and a double bedroom with antique furnishings, which faces the road. There is also a full bathroom on this floor. A door leads to the aforementioned small courtyard with gated steps down to the road and a gate to the neighbouring villa, S'Alqueria, ideal for two families who would like to holiday close to each other, whilst remaining totally private.
Back inside, a traditionally tiled stairway leads a twin bedroom, where thick walls and a tiny window with views towards the mountains help keep the temperatures down inside when temperatures rise outdoors. There is also a shower room on the first floor.
In the warm Mallorcan summer, the courtyard becomes the main living space and various rooms have been formed to suit differing moods, with shady corners, sunbathing terraces and a couple of seats in the cool old entrance barn which catches the occasional breeze and makes this an appealing spot to disappear to, with a good book.
As this lovely old Finca has its back turned to the little used Moscari Road, the occasional car will be heard.

The Mallorca/Majorca region
Situated on the edge of the green and wooded foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, the village of Campanet's one claim to fame is its amazing limestone caves, said to house the longest stalactite in the world! It also makes a good starting point for an exhilarating drive to the mountain top Monastry at Lluc via the picturesque village of Caimari.
Campanet has no less than three bakeries, as well as a well-stocked supermarket and a delicatessen. The sunny church square has a number of simple bars and small shops and it's a pleasant spot to linger over a morning coffee and sugary ensaimada before heading off for the day. Of an evening there are also two or three bars that serve authentic tapas or simple meals, but the village has surprisingly remained a peaceful backwater, virtually untouched by tourism.
Perched twin like atop a neighbouring hill and just 5 mins drive away, Buger (pronounced Boohair) is Mallorca's smallest municipality and holiday accommodation is still rare. Having received enthusiastic feedback about this drowsy little town from customers staying nearby, we were delighted to be offered a house on the outskirts. In the shady streets surrounding its magnificent church, life continues at a measured pace, much as it was before Mallorca became a holiday destination but a bank, post office, a small weekly market, minimarket, three simple café/bars, a popular weekend restaurant with a pretty terrace and an excellent baker provide the 'necessities of life'.
Old Pollença with a good choice of shops and restaurants is no more than a 15 minute drive. However for a truly memorable occasion, book a table at a small hotel in the nearby village of Binibona where gourmet food is served on a candlelit terrace. If you don't want to drink and drive there's even a local taxi.
For serious shoppers, the town of Inca, famous for its leather goods and with some excellent cellar resaturants, is a 10 minutes drive and from here or, even nearer Sa Pobla, you can also catch a train to Palma.
The nearest beaches at Puerto Pollenca or Alcudia are approx. 20 minutes drive.
