Old Chapel in summer

Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4

Key Info
  • Great for children of all ages 5
  • Car advised
  • No pets allowed

The Old Chapel is a cosy 2 bedroom cottage converted from an 1855 Baptist Chapel. It sits well back from the quiet road in a large garden shared with the owners who live next door.

The original front door opens onto a sitting room with a sofa and double sofa-bed, TV and DVD, internet, iPod dock and radio. Off the sitting room is the dining area which seats 4 and a well stocked kitchen with hob/oven, fridge/freezer, washer drier, microwave, kettle, toaster, etc.

Upstairs there is a large double and small single bedroom and family bathroom with bath and shower attachment. The double bed has a feather duvet. We also have a travel cot and high chair if you need it. We also have extra folding dining chairs if you have guests.

The village of Fulbourn has several shops and pub/restaurants. It is within easy reach of the university town of Cambridge. Buses leave from outside the Old Chapel every 20 minutes taking you to the railway station, city center and Addenbrooke's hospital.

The land for the chapel was originally purchased for 10 shillings in July 1855 on behalf of “a society of Protestant Dissenters of Denomination of Particular Calvinist Baptists”. Though it hasn't been active as a place of worship for more than 40 years, there is still a handfull of gravestones from the 1860s in the wood behind the chapel. These add to the charm of the place and don't in any way detract from the welcoming feeling you get when you step inside. There is a large garden with orchard to enjoy relaxing outside. Barbecue and picnic essentials available for your use plus bikes for two adults and one teenager.

The East Anglia region

Fulbourn lies on the edge of the Fens, an area of fertile land that stretches across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk and known for its amazing skyline. Every taste is catered for: from the beaches of Norfolk and Suffolk to historic cities of Cambridge and Ely; from shopping in London (only 48 minutes away by train from Cambridge) to racing at Newmarket; from sailing on the dykes of the Fens to stately homes, gardens and a castle or two.

The village of Fulbourn is mentioned in the Doomsday book and still has many ancient buildings. The village centre is only a few minutes walk away and has good pubs (all serving food) and local shops. The butcher and greengrocer sell excellent local produce.

Cambridge University, only 5 miles away, is one of the oldest and most famous universities in the world. The city of Cambridge also has a good selection of shops and attractive parks and walks along the river Cam. Punting on the river is a traditional way to spend warm summer afternoons.

Cambridge is famous for its cycling and we provide 2 bicycles which you can use to travel to and around the city.

The Imperial War Museum and Duxford is a great day out where you can go round and even inside the aircraft.

A visit to the city of Ely with its distinctive cathedral, only 20 miles away (access by car or train), should be an essential part of your holiday.

Wimpole Hall, Wicken Fenn, Anglesey Abbey and Audley End all make easy day trips and the Gog Magog golf course is only 2 miles away. You can also sample locally grown wine at Chilford Hall Vineyards.

The Norfolk coast is only 90 minutes away by car or train.

For people visiting relatives, then Addenbrooke's hospital is only 3 miles away and there is a direct bus route from outside the cottage.

A lovely spot close enough to Cambridge but out of the bustle. The garden is wonderful - a fantastic veggie plot, a chook house with a few residents that pop by for the rolled oats the owners supply. … More

"comfortable cottage very convenient for Cambridge"

Warm, cosy cottage in quiet location yet close to major routes into Cambridge. Well equipped but the single mattresses were very poor quality and uncomfortable.… More

We are so sorry you found the single mattresses uncomfortable. We have replaced the single bed mattress today and disposed of the spare one entirely as the single room is really too small for 2 adults to stay comfortably in the single room.
So the new mattress will be deeper, sprung and with memory foam and have a mattress topper on it too for added comfort.
