The South East England / Sussex region
Extraordinary character, charm and creativity flourish in East Sussex where history and art inspires the imagination and stimulates the senses of any 21st Century visitor.
The charming settings, characters from the past, architectural delights, contemporary art galleries, theatres, and local myths and legends, all come together to tell stories that fascinate, entertain and intrigue.
Be it contemporary culture, a walk around a historic home, or an opera performance that appeals, there’s a wealth of cultural and heritage activities to suit the most discerning of visitor.
Wherever you are in Sussex you are never far from delicious, fresh, local produce on sale directly from farmers markets, specialist retailers or appearing on the menus of a myriad of contemporary bistros, gastro-pubs, al-fresco cafes or award winning restaurants.
Sample the freshest cheeses, smoked fish, organic lamb, the finest sparkling wines and award winning local ales for the tastiest Sussex gastronomic experience
Sussex is home to some of the most beautiful and inspirational gardens in the country; from landscaped parks created by Capability Brown to traditional cottage gardens, the selection embraces the best of English gardens including Wakehurst Place - 'Kew in the Country', Charleston Farmhouse, Hertmonceux Castle, Nymans, Leonardslee and Borde Hill Gardens.
You'll be delighted by the thriving market towns and picturesque villages and hamlets of this area, each with their own individual character. The independent shopping opportunities and bustling market days; the enchanting glimpses through twisting medieval streets and tiny twittens; the ancient castles and attractive spired churches; the hidden villages with cricket greens and duck ponds overlooked by the village pub are all part of the Sussex village scene.
Camber area
There is so much to see and do in the local area. Guests can participate (or just be a spectator if preferred!), in a variety of activities including kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing less than 5 minutes drive away, jetski, waterski, karting, cycling, (hire shop in Rye), tennis, bowls, mini golf/putting, fishing, birdwatching, horseriding, walking, swimming (both at the the beach, which has been awarded a yellow flag by MCS, the highest UK award for water quality standards, and at the new indoor pool at Rye. Or, if you are a golfer and want to play at the very private Rye (Old) Golf Club only minutes from the cottage, and considered to be one of the most memorable and challenging links courses in the country, visitors can either turn up and play on the newer course nearer the sea, or contact them in advance via their website. Alternatively there is the 18 hole Links Golf Club at nearby Lydd where no expense has been spared in creating this beautiful course with its tactical blend of bunkering and strategically placed lakes.
The following are also well worth participating in – if you still have time that is!
*Rye – Historic town and Cinque Port famous for its cobbled streets, antique shops, Castle, Norman Church, Medieval, Tudor and Georgian houses (large variety of lovely inns, restaurants and tea shops too!) *Battle – Site of 1066 Battle with Abbey, Battlefields, and Town (Olde Worlde town steeped in history) *Hastings – traditional seaside town including Sea Life Centre, Funicular Railway and Country Park *Canterbury – Famous Cathedral and now a UNESCO World Heritage site *Ashford – Eurostar Station (Paris less than 3 hours) & Retail Shopping Outlet (plus large Tesco and Asda) *Lydd Airport – brief 30 minute flight from nearby Lydd Airport to the elegant, French resort of Le Touquet with its fantastic restaurants, vast beach and chic boutiques *Rare Breeds Centre, Farm World and Port Lympne Zoo *Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway + Romney,Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (15" gauge working railway) *Bodiam Castle – National Trust owned picturesque, fairytale-like medieval castle with moat and towers. *Winchelsea – Smallest town in England with delightful walks and a teashop *Tenterden – Charming Kentish market town and Leisure Centre with flume, wave machine and ‘lazy river’ *Rye Harbour Nature Reserve - A mosaic of habitats beside the sea with shingle, saltmarsh, sand dunes, rivers, pits, grazing marsh, reedbeds and farmland and full of wildlife to discover *Local Vineyards – Wine tasting and purchasing *Sissinghurst Castle Garden - Former home and well kept garden of Vita Sackville West, writer and friend of Virginia Woolf. *Great Dixter Gardens - Fantastic gardens owned by journalist Christopher Lloyd *Scotney Castle Gardens - National Trust Victorian country house set in one of England's most romantic gardens surrounded by a beautiful wooded estate
In Camber itself there is a Church, a couple of supermarkets (Londis bakes fresh bread/pastries daily), a Post Office, fish and chip restaurant, a couple of public houses, the highly acclaimed 'The Place' brasserie/restaurant and some cafes and gift shops. We can highly recommend 'Dunes Bar' - newly refurbished, really good food (Sunday lunch is lovely) and right by the dunes. Also, 'Naughties' (!) cafe is great
A much larger selection of shops, cafes, restaurants etc. can be found in Rye, including Budgens supermarket, and the town plays host to many events throughout the year including the famous Arts Festival each September, the Bonfire Parade each November and its annual Scallop Festival, when restaurants all over the ancient town take part in the festival, offering the scallop in a variety of ways. It’s often sautéed in butter, or else breaded and deep fried and then eaten with a glass of dry white wine.
Comprehensive details of all the above + useful numbers can be found in the Eden Cottage Information Book

How to get there
Travel information for UK residents
If you're coming by public transport , the nearest station is Rye, East Sussex. In front of the station are some bus stops. The 711 bus goes to Camber (about 3 miles) and on towards Lydd / Folkestone .
If you're driving and coming from the direction of Hastings, then take the coast road, the A259 to Rye and follow the signs to Camber from there. If you're travelling from London then the M20 is our choice. Come off at junction 10 and follow the signs for the A2070 to Brenzett or Lydd. This road then becomes the A259. When you get to the Brenzett roundabout with the Total garage by the ‘Little Chef’ restaurant, go straight on for a few miles until you come to a turning on the left for Camber.
