The Corsica region
THE CORSICA REGION
Corsica, also known as the Isle of Beauty (Ile de Beauté) is reputedly one of the most attractive holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. The fourth biggest island in the Mediterranean lying some 200km from the French coast and 80 km from Italy, it presents typical Italian and French influences though retaining its own distinct character through a variety of historical traditions, sacred monuments and authentic Mediterranean way of life. Corsica is an unspoilt, uncommercalised island boasting a variety of breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Whether visiting its almost 1,000 km of coastline with its uncrowded white sandy beaches and crystal water creeks or its contrasting green island vegetation with high mountains and medieval villages, Corsica offers plenty of amenities to enjoy. The island is an ideal holiday destination for those looking to savour the simple and authentic pleasures of life, or those wishing to experience a genuine contact with nature, be it through a wealth of water sports and mountain climbing or by simply stretching out on the beach and relaxing under the sun with your family.
The Calvi area
THE CALVI AREA
Calvi, head of the Balagne region, is an ideal choice for a first time visit to Corsica. It is a judicious blend of traditional Corsican culture and of a modern resort with its palm tree planted harbour and lively restaurants, cafès, shops and welcoming terraces which line the Quai Laundry promenade. Overlooking the red tiled town is Calvi 's majestic fortress symbolizing six centuries of Genoese rule - a remarkable example of military and cultural heritage. By following the ramparts one may enjoy the most beautiful view of the Calvi bay to the Balagne mountains in the background. Within its walls you will find cobbled passages, long winding staircases tucked between old houses with the old Cathedral of St. Jean Baptiste at its highest point. The Citadel reputedly also houses the birthplace of Christopher Colombus. Calvi plays host to many music festivals during the summer which includes the Jazz Festival in June and Calvi on the Rocks in July and a beautiful art exhibition from June to September in the Citadel. As the capital of the Balagne region Calvi is also the ideal starting point to visit the picturesque hilltop Balagne villages like Pigna renowned for its music festival, S. Antonino prized as one of France's most beautiful villages, Zilia famous for its spring waters, Montemaggiore and Cateri among others. If you wish to discover the Balagne's natural beauty by the sea one can take a boat trip to the Scandola Nature Reserve, a UNESCO world heritage to discover scenic bays and nearby creeks. If you are a sun lover and wish to discover different white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters, you are spoilt for choice - try the beaches of Ostriconi, Bodri, Algajola, Saleccia or venture in the Désert des Agriates not without hiring a jeep first! For sports fans windsurf, plunging, cycling, tennis , walking itineraries and horse riding are all available in Calvi.
