"Ice cream and history under the gaze of Etna"
Villa Manfredi sits quiety on the outskirts of Caltagirone, a pretty town about an hour inland from Catania. The town itself has enough interest to browse round with lovely gardens, but it is well placed to explore the South of Sicily. Places such as Agrigento, The Roman Villa complex at Piazza Amerina, and ancient sights at Ragusa, and Syracus plus the amazingly pretty Baroque towns of Scicly and Nota are all within easy reach. We had a clear view of Etna from Caltagirone and the drive there was about one and a half hours. For those who like walking there are several National Nature reserves within an hours drive. The spring flowers and the stunning scenery made for some excellent outings. The coast is about 45 mins drive. The apartment is spacious with a balcony and it's own separate entrance and parking, and secure in the gated gardens of the house and Jane and Emmanuel are helpful and gracious but never intrusive. Having found the excellent local market we did a lot of home cooking but there are a range of places to eat in the town. To the cost of my waistline I felt compelled to compare and contrast some of the excellent ice creams and granitas available in every small town, My particular favourite was in the small cafe on the crossroads in the village of Ferla which is at the gateway to the Reserva Natural Pantalica. The spectacular walk afterwards helped my concience. Take a good up to date road map.
