The Caltagirone area
Caltagirone is world famous for its production of ceramics. Visit potteries, shops and have the possibility to partake in a decoration course.
Its Baroque architecture has enabled it to be part of UNESCO heritage.
The main landmark is the 142 monumental Steps, decorated with multi-coloured maiolica tiles echoing moorish, norman, spanish, baroque and more contemporary patterns from past dominations. Four evenings a year (24, 25 July and 14,15 August) the staircase is illuminated with thousands of candles to create a flowing design.
During July and August there are several musical and other artistic events to suit all ages including the night of "La Villa" (23rd July) when a 40 minute firework display takes place. In December and January there are a variety of "Nativity" exhibitions and at Easter there are interesting, traditional religious parades.
Several museums and churches can be found in the historic centre and there is a lovely public garden "La Villa" to walk in.
An important ceramic museum is located beside the very attractive public gardens. There is also a civic museum and comtemporary art museum plus a cathedral and many interesting churches. Numerous shops and bars for the younger generation.
The "Little Train" offers rides from the main square around the city.
