The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Calpe has excellent shops and supermarkets with a wealth of restaurants of all kinds. Although we have some favourites, we always say there are no bad restaurants: the competition is too strong for all but the best to survive. Even so, do explore the fishing port area at the side of rock. If you enjoy seafood, you will not find better.
The local morning street markets are excellent for fresh fruit, cooked meats, cheeses, vegetables and flowers. Be prepared to bargain for clothes, watches and a wide range of goods and you will do very well.
Calpe is ideally placed for exploring the Spanish countryside. The Jalon valley runs inland behind Calpe and is the local wine-producing area. There are several bodegas where you can sample the wines of the region. It has excellent pavement cafes, superb restaurants and high-class craft shops.
Drive on through the Jalon to find towns and villages at every turn and views to remember.
take the next valley south to Callosa, through hundreds of acres of citrus groves, and you will find the Fonts del Algar, which you may remember from a hair shampoo advert. You can walk beside (and even bathe in) a series of crystal clear lagoons and waterfalls.
Follow the valley to Guadalest where an amazing castle sits on the pinnacles of a mountain. It is accessible only through a tunnel in the rock face. Flat space is so much at a premium that the church and its bell tower are on different peaks.
Nearby is The Ark, a charitable rescue centre for lions and other exotic animals supported by Queen Sophia.
Calpe / Shangrila, La Vallesa II area
Shangrila is a small residential community with 2 blocks of duplex bungalows and a few villas. Although only a short drive from the centre of Calpe and its magnificent "talcum powder beaches" (Daily Telegraph), it is on a private road with no through traffic.
As well as our own pool, which is 4 metres by 8 metres, the community pool is available to guests and has a separate shallow children's area. It is a few hundred yards away and is ideal for meeting other residents and their children.
The villa is 1.5km from Blue Flag beaches. Calpe's seafront is unique in being totally traffic-free. Families stroll in complete safety along the beautifully tiled promenade, which is lined with bars, shops and restaurants. The nearest road is hundreds of metres inland. The dining room is through an arched opening and seats 4 in comfort. There is a serving bar into the kitchen which is fully equipped with gas cooker and electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, sandwich toaster, juicer and all the choices of cutlery, crockery and bits and pieces every home needs.
There is a full bathroom with over-bath shower, wc and bidet, and a separate wc entered from outside to save those wet footprints from the poolside.
Strictly non-smoking. Central heating by arrangement out of season.

Had a lovely holiday renewing memories of Calpe. Loved your villa & were able to fully relax.
We had a really super stay! The outside space is second to none (and we've stayed in many villas in Costa Blanca area).
We can totally relax in/around the pool and the kids love it! Restaurants in the old town/craft market are both lovely.
It is our first time to Calpe it will certainly not be our last. The location & setting of your villa is brilliant. We have stayed in many villas around Europe but this is one of the finest.
We have returned from Calpe after a most enjoyable week. Villa Cassandra was delightful and suited our needs most admirably. So much so that we hope to return to the villa at some point. We enjoyed many of the places you recommended especially the Peter Pan coffee house!
Once again we had a wonderful time, everything was just perfect.
