Casa Della Loggia is a pretty little house situated in the 'Antico Borgo' - the historical centre of the unspoilt - and traditionally Soutthern Italian - hillside town of Calitri. The 'Borgo' is a labyrinth of pretty cobbled streets and steps leading up to a piazza and an 11th century castle.
Calitri sits in a corner of Campania bordering Puglia and Basilicata. It is roughly midway between the Amalfitan and Adriatic coasts (approx 70-90 minute drive) and is in the countryside of Irpinia where there are numerous ancient villages high on the hills and mountains and ruins of old castles and churches. There are many places of interest nearby to visit, lovely countryside walks or you can just sit and relax outside the house and enjoy the stunning views.
For such a small town, there is a wealth of bars, cafes and restaurants, where good food, wines and other drinks can be enjoyed without breaking the budget. There are plenty of shops and little self-service food stores both in the Borgo and in the adjacent 'new' town and there is a bakers just up the stone steps at the side of the house.
In the summer, the local hotel, which is in the new town - opens its outdoor swimming pool, restaurant and bar to the public. It is about a 5 minute drive or a 25 minute walk from the house. Close by the hotel (about 1 minute) is 'Tre Rose' a restaurant, run by a commune of townspeople, where you can eat and drink really good local food at a very reasonable price. Booking is necessary for the evening but not always necessary for lunch. There is also 'Pizza Manhattan' across the road from the hotel which sells take-away pizzas but you can also sit down for a meal.
Much nearer to the house - at the top of the Borgo - is La Locanda dell'Arco. There are two restaurants. One is up-market with excellent food but more pricey than the other restaurants in Calitri and the other is more economical but the food is still extremely good. You can also buy a pizza to take away. Even nearer to the house (up a few flights of steps and along a bit - about a 6 or 7 minutes walk) is La Gatta Cenerentola (Cinderella Cat). This is a lovely place to eat and, in a very traditional manner, there will be a couple of freshly made dishes of the day but not a wide range of food. Tre Rose, La Locanda and La Gatta Cenerentola are all reviewed on Trip-Advisor.
In July and August there is a daily bus to and from Margherita di Savoia a busy seaside town with fine sandy beaches and a thermal spa. There are also daily buses to the city of Avellino stopping at some of the smaller towns on the way.
You will be greeted, on arrival, by Emma who speaks fluent English. Emma will take you to the house and give you a key which you will return to her when you leave. She will also be on hand with advice on where to go etc. should you need it. We will give you her phone number about a week before you go so that you can let her know - as soon as you know - the estimated time of your arrval.
Although Casa della Loggia is a non-smoking house you are, of course, free to smoke on the balcony while you enjoy the views and an ashtray is provided for this purpose

The Campania region
Campania is truly a unique and stunningly beautiful area of Italy – whether you visit the coast or stay inland in the ruggedly beautiful hills. It is remarkably easy to get around either by car, taxi or public transport. For example, Avellino can be reached in an hour and a half by bus (more quickly by car) from Calitri and, once there there are trains and buses to the Amalfitan coast, Naples, Rome and many other places.
Wherever you go in Campania, there are local dishes and wines for you to try. There is a wealth of monuments and archaeological parks, for example, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and the archaeological park at Conza, to name but a few. There are lakes, spas and many other places of interest which are very easy to reach from Calitri.
Avellino is the capital town of the province of Avellino in which Calitri is situated. It is a large, clean and bustling town with, in addition to churches and museums, a wonderful pedestrian only shopping centre.
The province of Avellino includes many small hillside towns and village like Calitri which is in its furthest corner. There are many places of interest in this province
