The Turkish Aegean Coast region
The Turkish Riviera or Turquoise coast is so called for its aquamarine waters and is renowned for its fine climate, beautiful beaches and boasts a stunning natural scenery of rugged mountains. It is the ancient kingdom of Lycia, whose race bequeathed a legacy of their remarkable rock tombs elegantly carved into the faces of the cliffs.
Some of the most interesting places to visit are as follows;-
At the far west of the region is Dalyan, a must see, famous for its breeding ground of logger-head turtles on Iztuzu beach, reached by a river boat along a creek overlooked by Lycian rock tombs.
Oludeniz(calm sea) is a sheltered blue lagoon famous for its white sandy beaches and para-gliding off Babadag mountain, with adjoining resort of the bustling Hisonaru and eerie Kayakoy, the ghost town of 2000 stone houses, deserted by the Ottoman-Greek inhabitants after WWI and the Turkish War of Independence.
Follow the coastal route through Butterfly valley, home of the unique Jersey Tiger butterfly.
See Tlos, the oldest city in the region with archeological ruins.
Spectacular Saklikent (means hidden city) gorge and canyon is definitely worth a visit. It is 18km long, steep and narrow in parts where the sun does not penetrate so the water is icy cold in summer.
Relax in Patara, the birth place of St. Nicholas which has a superb beach stretching some 50 metres wide and 20km long.
Last but by no means least, lively Fethiye is a very old market town and was originally called Telmessos. It is a semi circular bay with a pretty marina sheltered by 12 speckled islands which you can tour around in search of secluded coves in which to swim, fish and camp out.
The Fethiye region has many interesting sites to explore from museums, Roman ruins to water sports, for all ages, offering eateries with great hospitality, inexpensive shopping and a thriving nightlife not to mention great weather. Come see for yourself!
Fethiye is a perfect base as it is open all year round. Its colourful harbour offers a range of daily boat tours to cruise along the luscious green mountainous coastline. It can be easily reached by road (10 minutes) or water taxi (30 minutes) from Calis and has a large range of shops, bars, restaurants, a cinema and other attractions. Market day is on a Tuesday and well worth a visit to bag many a bargain.
Nearby Calis is 5km north of Fethiye. There is a splendid esplanade adorned with Turkish, English, Italian, Chinese and Indian restaurants, all reasonably priced. It has a market on Sunday. It is famous for its beautiful sunsets. There is so much to do and see. Take a splash in the water park, indulge in the Turkish Hammam baths, horse ride along the sea front, trek up the mountains, go cycling/quad biking/ white water rafting/scuba diving and bowling to name but a few.
