The Fuerteventura region
With three thousand hours of sunshine a year, Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast, with only 100km separating the two. Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island (after Tenerife), yet is the least developed of all the islands.
The weather conditions of Fuerteventura are similar to Florida and Mexico (without the hurricanes!!!), which make it the ideal all year round holiday location. What better way could you spend your summers away from the fumes of the traffic or the winters away from the clouds and rain.
Fuerteventura offers more than 150 beaches, so you’re never too far away from the sea and sand. Some are wild and lonely like something out of a picture postcard, while others bustle with tourist activity.
Water Sports are very popular in Fuerteventura. Every year hundreds of surfers, windsurfers and divers descend on Fuerteventura and during July the island plays host to the P.W.A. World Windsurfing Championships.
Caleta de Fuste / Costa de Antigua area
Costa Antigua/Nuevo Horizonte
Costa Antigua is situated about 8 km south of the airport and about 1.5km north of Costa Caleta. The main area of Costa Antigua is under developed so you can enjoy the peace and quiet; however there are a few bars, restaurants and supermarkets within a short walk. There is also a very pleasant coastal walkway from Costa Antigua to Costa Caleta, which takes a leisurely 30 mins on foot or you could take a 5-minute taxi journey which will cost approx. 3 euros. There is also a free bus service within 5 mins walk provided by the Elba Hotels that will take you to the Atlantico Shopping Centre, Beach and/or Golf Course.
Costa Caleta (formerly known as Caleta de Fuste)
Caleta boasts a large well protected beach which is very safe and therefore ideal for children. During the peak season there is a British Sandcastle School to keep the kids amused for hours. The small harbour at one end of the beach (known as Castillo) offers the usual water-sports, boat trips, diving, jet-skiing and even submarine excursions. Dolphins and pilot whales are common sights a little further out to sea.
Caleta is a particularly friendly town and caters extremely well for families and couples alike. There is a multitude of good restaurants in Caleta that cater for all tastes at very reasonable prices. The main shopping area is traffic-free and there are boutiques, gift shops, bars, restaurants, banks and supermarkets. There is a market once a week, on Saturday morning, where you can barter for goods; there are some bargains to be had in leather.
The resort also boasts two golf courses with the main one being accredited to PGA Championship standard and hosted the 2004 Spanish Open.
Across the main road from the golf course you will find the Atlantico Shopping Centre. This offers some fine quality shops, supermarket and restaurants, as well as a multi-screen cinema and Ten-Pin bowling alley.
