The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the oldest island in the Canary Islands dating back 20 million years to a volcanic eruption from the Canary hotspot. It is the second largest of the Canary islands although not the most populated by any means. Fuerteventura remains the unknown gem of the Canary Islands...all year sunshine and with 150 kilometres of fine white sand, Fuerteventura has the biggest selection of beaches of all the Canary Islands.
The climate on the island throughout the year is pleasant. The island is also called the island of eternal springs. The sea adjusts the temperature making the hot Sahara winds blow away from the island of Fuerteventura. The island's name in English translates as "strong wind". During the winter months, temperatures average a high of 21 °C and a low of around 15 °C, whereas during the summer a mean high of 27 °C and a low of 20 °C can be expected.
The sites of interest includes Corralejo and El Jable to the north which are made up of fine sand dunes, the south is filled with long beaches and remote bays. With seemingly endless stretches of white sand and crystal clear water, Fuerteventura’s coastline is a paradise for sun-worshippers and watersports enthusiasts. There are a total of 152 beaches offering something for everyone. Some are wild and lonely, like something from Robinson Crusoe, while others bustle with tourist activity. There are child-friendly beaches, surfing beaches and remote spots favoured by nature-lovers and bird-watchers.
The Island also boasts many excellent restaurants and shops for you to visit if you ever want a change from those golden sands.
Caleta de Fuste / Costa de Antigua area
Just outside Caleta de Fuste lies Costa de Antigua - a much quieter area for people seeking a really relaxing holiday. An area much more laid back and quieter than its neighbouring town.
There are a few hotels in Costa de Antigua offering entertainment and a few bars where there is nightly entertainment. But Costa de Antigua is more of a residential area - a place where you can really relax totally.
Costa Antigua is an emerging resort still in its infancy located 1Km away from Caleta de Fuste, and offers very easy access to all amenities. The international airport is less than ten minutes drive away and the island’s two golf course a few minutes drive
Within Costa Antigua there is a couple of estate agents if youre thinking of investing yourself, and a few bars offering food as well as entertainment, at reasonable prices in a very friendly atmosphere. There is also a supermarket very near by which sells british goodies, a hairdressers a pizza house and a shop called Bits and Pieces which as its name suggests sells various items from lightbulbs to garden furniture.
If you want to pick up the pace of your holiday then the neighbouring long established resort of Caleta de Fuste is only minutes away, either via a breath taking coastal walk, where you can take in the scenery and even make friends with the chipmonks, or if you prefer it is only a 5 minute taxi ride (€3).
Here in Caleta you will have a varied choice of restaurants, bars , shops etc.
There is a free bus service will also take you to the beaches, Golf Course and the Atlantico Shopping Centre where there are more bars, restaurants, a bowling alley, cinemas and a large Spar supermarket.
How to get there
Various companies fly to Fuerteventura and prices vary greatly depending on the time of year.
Ryan Air flies to Fuerteventura from Dublin and Shannon 3 times a week and also from Girona (Barcelona) and Thomas Cook are currently offering some good deals, again prices vary.
Having a car isn't a necessity as public transport is good but car hire can be relatively cheap and a very good way of seeing other parts of the island and beaches which are amazing and well worthwhile visiting.
