The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the hidden gem of the canary islands with stretches of crystal clear waters and pure white sand beaches to rival ones found in the caribbean. It lies just to the south of Lanzarote, and is close to the equator, hence the fantastic holiday weather.
Fuerteventura airport is a few miles south of the island's capital Puerto Del Rosario, and a few miles north of Caleta de Fuste, in the northern half of the Fuerteventura.
The north of the island is where most of the English-speaking tourists are to be found, and the main resorts in this part of the island are Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo. The transfer time between the airport and Caleta de Fuste is around 15 minutes, and to Coraralejo is about 40 minutes.
Fuerteventura attracts visitors that are generally interested in a quiet relaxing holiday, and it lacks the crowds of drunken youths that are to be found in some of the busy resorts on other islands. The scenery is spectacular with volcanos, mountain ranges, quaint canarian villages, great food and drink, and outstanding beaches. There are many water sport and diving schools. Windsurfing and waterskiing are particularly popular. There are also many Catamaran and deep sea fishing excursions available.
Fuerteventura has a sub tropical climate and is on the same latitude as Florida. The temperatures during the day never drop below 22 degrees all year round and in summer the cooling breeze is very welcoming .
Caleta de Fuste / Central Caleta area
The resort of Caleta de Fuste is located halfway down the east coast of Fueteventura, approximately 6 miles south of the airport. Caleta de Fuste is situated around a partly natural, partly man-made sandy beach. It is sometimes known as El Castillo de Fuste, the ‘Castillo’ (Castle) refers to the 18th Century watchtower by the Harbour, near a small marina and lighthouse. The Resort has grown up either side of the coast road, a tunnel that runs beneath that road links the two halves.
Caleta de Fuste is suitable for anyone in search of an effortless beach holiday and good bars and restaurants for evening entertainment. Caleta de Fuste is good for families and keen golfers. The beach, Playa Caleta de Fuste is the focal point of the resort. It has good sand and thatched parasols, and a breakwater, making it safe for young children and weak swimmers.
