The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, with some of the best beaches this side of the Caribbean, yet less than half the flying time from England. It is situated 60 miles off the coast of North West Africa, with the warmth of the African continent and little rain, the weather conditions are very similar to Florida and Maxico which are on the same latitude, making this Island a perfect all year round destination, for couples of all ages, families, beach lovers and water sport enthusiasts. If you hire a car to explore the Island, there are many unspoilt magnificent beaches some of the best in Europe, suitable for sun worshipers and lovers of water sports alike. Away from the beaches there are many places of interest and outstanding scenery, stop off at a view point to admire the scenery and you may see some chipmunks as well (do'nt forget to take your camera). Other places to visit are Betancuris. Museum at La Alcogida a restored farm village that gives a sense of life on Fuerteventura before tourism and La Oliva to name a few.
Caleta de Fuste
FIESTA CENTRE (Was Montecastillo centre)/Caleta de Fuste and beyond.
The Fiesta Centre (Montecastillo centre) is just 130 metres away with shops, supermarkets, bars with entertainment, restaurants, a mini golf course and children's play ground. A 10 minute walk or short mini-train ride will take you direct to the main resort centre of Caleta de Fuste the beach and on to the small harbour where there is a scuba diving centre and the usual water sport facilities, submarine and catamaran trips are also available from here, some trips include a trip round the Aquarium and a Sea Lion show. The main resort centre has a larger variety of shops, banks, medical centre, restaurants including Chinese, Italian and Spanish as well as English and bars providing all types of entertainment from live music to karaoke. There is a local market is held in the Fiesta centre car park every Saturday. The new Atlantico complex has shops including a Spar supermarket, bank, restaurants and bars, 10 Pin bowling alley and a multi-screen cinema which are in walking distance of our bungalow.
There are two golf courses within a 5 minutes drive, one has held the Spanish open.
The beach is gently shelving with golden sand. The clean and calm shallow waters of the bay make this a popular choice for families and the old and young alike.
A good bus service operates to the main towns, but a car would be advantageous if you wish to explore further. For motor bikers, these can be hired from East Coast Rides in Caleta, web site www.fuerteventurarides.com
The Island has many attractions and places of interest including a Zoo, Botonic gardens, Churches, Eco museum, Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography and a Go-kart circuit just to mention a few. Quad bike tours of the Island are available to view some of the Islands scenery . The Zoo can be reached by a free bus service which runs from the Caleta Dorada complex about 300 m after turning left out of our gate.
If you like Scuba diving there are many different opportunities which will satisfy both beginners and advanced divers. As the Island is volanic there are many superb diving sites, with fabulous rock formation, reefs and wrecks and a variety of marine life such as angel sharks. eagle rays barracudas and moray ells etc. The visibility all year round is an exceptional 30 metres. The sea temperature in winter ranges between 17 - 18 degrees C and 22 - 23 degrees C in the summer,
Puerto de Rosario
If you are thinking of taking a break at Christmas/New Year 2013/2014 you may want to consider a break after the Christmas festivities in England.
Christmas is a little mixed up in Fuerteventura. Father Christmas, or Papa Noel visits children on Christmas eve. Although Spanish children will probably get gifts from him too, the Spanish tradition is for children to get their gifts in the early hours of the sixth of January on Dia de los Reyes or Kings day. This is the day when the three kings arrived to give their gifts to baby Jesus.
The three kings arrive, strangely enough by ferry around 5pm in Puerto de Rosario on the evening of the fifth, and Melchor, Gaspar, Balthasar climb on their camels for a tour of the town, all the time throwing out sweets for the children (and adults). There is a huge scrabble around the floor to pick up the sweets. We believe they also go up Chipmunk mountain on their camels on the sixth, which we have been told it is something worth seeing.
The way to Chipmunk mountain is towards the rear of our property.
There is also a nativity scene in Puerto de Rosario opposite the bus station, which is worth a visit.
