The Catalunia region

This ¨wild coast¨ perfectly characterizes the rocky, rugged, windswept Mediterranean coastline of Northern Spain, which stretches from Portbou near France as far as Blanes, measuring almost 200km in length. At the end of the 19th century it was artists who discovered the unique quality of light, mild climate and rugged beauty of this coastline. By 1930´s the Costa Brava had become a destination for the intellectual avant-garde. The increase in wealth due to the rebuilding of the economy after the second world war attracted northern and mid-europeans to the Costa Brava. That is when the centers of mass tourism appeared, like Lloret de Mar and Platje d´Aro. But thankfully there are many original and characteristic villages with nice beaches left to visit (for example Tossa de Mar, L´escala, Begur, St Feliu de Quixols and Palafrugell). There are also a lot of beaches, like Sant Pere Pescador or l’Escala to spend a whole day.

Calella de Palafrugell

Palafrugell is right in the middle of the Costa Brava, in a beautiful setting. The coastline of the municipality is made up of endless rocks, cliffs, beaches and remote, extremely beautiful beaches. We recommend a trip by boat or kayak along our coastline to discover all its charm.

Close at hand, we recommend taking time to visit the Dalí Museum in Figueres (50 km away), the Gala-Dalí Castle in Púbol (21 km away), the Jewish Quarters in Girona (45 km away), the Gothic part of Pals (7 km away), the Medes Isles Natural Park in L’Estartit (20 km away), the mediaeval villages of Palau-Sator (11 km away) and Peratallada (15 km away), the Iberian settlement in Ullastret (16 km away), the ruins of Empúries (39 km away), etc.

In the Baix Empordà region, there are networks of expressly designed and signposted paths to do on foot or by bicycle. In the tourist information offices and in several bookshops in the region you can acquire maps and guidebooks that will help you design your itineraries. The coastal paths in the municipality enable you to get to know the most charming parts of the Costa Brava in detail.

The gastronomy of Calella de Palafrugell is very rich and varied. Traditional dishes as well as the most avant-garde creations can be found on restaurant menus and are prepared using first-class ingredients. In Palafrugell, there is a daily market for fruit and vegetables, meat and fish which is open every day from Tuesday to Saturday; the weekly market every Sunday and the evening market which is a craft market that takes place in the summer.

Calella de Palafrugell has a great offer of festivals, the most importants are Cap Roig Gardens Festival during the summer and the Havanera Recital, taking place on the first Saturday in July.
